How to Focus Via Optical Viewfinder & Other confusions

Hello everyone,

coming up empty (and even more confused) trying to figure out a few things

xpro-1 with the 35mm

1.
how do i set the DR to auto? it is always grayed out.
i've reset to factory settings, i've gone back and forth on almost every other setting. nothing has enabled me to choose AUTO for dynamic range

2.
focusing via OVF.
never have i found it more challenging just to get this straight


a. i have the camera set to manual and OVF

b. looking from the OVF, i see 2 squares, solid lines, no "dotted" lines like i've ready in some posts. one small frame owards the center, one larger frame almost the size of the OVF

c. when i push down the shutter halfway, the outer frame move. again, no dotted lines, only solid.
till now, i have not figured out what that movement is telling me.
it i turn the focus ring, the outer frame moves more or less depending on how i turn it.
this tells me it has SOMETHING to do with the focus, and yet i can tell one way or another whats going on

i resort to the manual, and the only thing i can find is the "correct AF frame"

here it clames that the OVF will show a green focus frame when pressed halfway. really? cause i don't see one at all​

so i guess i'd just like to know how is the OVF suppose to be used to focus? i feel like im missing something completely

1. Maybe you have it set for raw only?

2. Look at page 21 of the manual. The big square is the frameline that shows field of view for the lens (like those on a Leica) & changes size with focus distance & moves to correct for parallax, the (much) smaller square is the focus patch (or "frame" in the manual). If you activate corrected AF frame, you will see 2 focus patches w/the 1 in the lower right for closer distances.

Not sure what you mean by "camera set to manual." Do you mean manual focus? If so, then you should be using the EVF to focus like an SLR by turning the lens, not the OVF, which will only give you a distance readout. The OVF makes sense to use w/autofocus, which you can use even when the camera is set to "manual focus" by pressing the focus button on the back.

You can also push the thumb dial on the back upper right like a button- when in MF on the OVF this will toggle on a magnified EVF view that you can use to fine-tune focus. Push it again to go back to the OVF display. (Although you can shoot from here as well, it saves the whole image, not just the cropped view).

It's not intuitive to figure out, but once you know what to do it actually makes sense in a strange sort of way.

I have an X100 and Auto DR only works if you have Auto ISO on.

The X-Pro 1 defnitely lets you select Auto DR even w/Auto ISO off.

Auto DR is only available when you set image quality to any of the JPEG settings, without RAW. If you set RAW+JPEG you can set DR 100; and DR200 if the ISO is 400 or higher; and DR400 if the ISO is 800 or higher.

Are you sure about that? Checked my X-Pro1 (latest firmware) this morning & w/raw + JPG, the full range of DR settings is available, including Auto. The DR settings would only affect the JPGs, anyway.

Well, seems you are correct. I just got my Xpro-1 (before the price drop, naturally🙄 ) and I had the same issue as reported by the OP. Then I set the camera to JPEG Fine and the DR Auto became available. After reading your post, I set image to Fine, DR to Auto, then switched to Raw+Fine, and yes, Auto and DR100 are available. Same with Image just at Raw. Can't begin to explain this...
