Converted-to-Black-Paint Leica M's, show 'em here!

I was keeping an eye on a repainted black paint M2 at KEH.com last week hoping to get it once I get some money together. It was rated as BGN and had a very good price but alas, now it's gone.
I hoping one of you guys bought it and could post a picture of it here. I just want to know what I missed.... painful it may be.

Is the L of the seal "positive" or "negative"? This could be a camera that is custom-made by Leitz. In that case the serial number of the camera is written on the inside of the top plate in a special way.

Erik.

Hi Eric,

The L is recessed (negative) and I have no idea if the serial number is written inside the top. It would be interesting to find out I guess!

Simon

Simon,
I think a recessed seal means that Leitz did a service or upgrade. The raised L was the original seal. Or is it the other way around?!!!!😱
Whatever it is, your M2 looks terrific,

Shouldn't have clicked on this post.
Now I want a BP too.

But my M2 is a very early one
So i want to keep it original.

Think I'll just have to go hunting for a beater

Hi Simon,

When the camera needs a CLA you'll find out. It is for 100% a Leitz job, could be a restoration or a custom-made camera.

I have one that looks a lot like yours, it only has chrome eyelets. Recently, it got new curtains (original ones) and my repairman told me the serial number was written inside the top. In the top of my black M3 the number is also written in exactly the same way. It was done to identify the top in the factory before the number was engraved. It was made to fit exactly the housing of the camera.

I just found out my repainted M3 by Lumiere wasn't stripped to brass. It's showing chrome.

At least it complements my chrom 50 Lux... Paid 1200USD for the bugger.

Here's mine

It could be that the top and bottom plates were only stripped to nickel. It's a lot harder to remove than the chrome.

A dream of mine: to own an M that was stripped down to the nickel and left that way.

It would be real nice with a nickel Summar, Elmar or Hektor 50mm. I would prefer an M3 like that.

Not that difficult if I'm not mistaking:
if you take the parts to a chromer, the inverse electrolytic process will leave the parts with no chrome with the Nickel untouched.

Shintaro did this one for me. the finish is what we call "real estate" paint - referring to the "stucco" finish popular by builders as it can hide a multitude of sins - in this case some scratches and minor dents. A bit of a texture to the finish - actually improves the grip on the camera.

Out of curiosity, are there other MP owners who are considering or have already converted their chrome MP's to black paint? I bought a chrome one and Leica won't sell me another top plate in black paint!

I think you would be better off selling or trading your MP toward a BP MP.

On the used market, the BP's fetch a little bit more, but it will be cheaper than sending your MP in to be repainted (~$500 for a good job). Plus, if you ever wanted to sell it, you would lose a lot of money on a repaint camera vs an original (for newer cameras, at least).
