I have several cameras with too different film in them and they lack the plastic holder to put a piece of the film cardboard box found on most reflex of yesteryear.

Is there a DIY way of a vendor who has those plastic holders for use with leica M4/M4p and rolleiflex?

I just write the f ilm type and frame count on a small piece of masking tape which I stick to the bottom of the camera.

Camera places sell them sometimes. I remember buying a few at Calumet (I think) a year or two ago. They stick to the camera however, so it's up to you if want to use one or not.

I once bought a few on fleabay but I'll be darned if I can find them on there now. They had adhesive backs and were perfect. You might want to stop into Staples or Office Max and I'll bet they have something you can cut down and use. My current method is pretty odd, but it works for me. As soon as I load a camera w/ film I tape the film box shut and write on it w/ a Sharpie what camera it's in, the date, and whether or not I am using a filter on the lens. I also jot down one particular shot so that after the film is developed I know what camera it came out of.

I really like the idea of slipping the box top into the camera's hotshoe, but my old folders don't have a hotshoe.

I bought mine a few years ago from Leica Goodies...not sure if they still sell them.

You can go on Ebay or direct to <sales@cambrianphoto.co.uk> and ask for a "Kaiser Memory Holder" Product # 6055. I just bought one from them for Pds Stg 4.45. It's exactly what you're asking for and I got it for my Rolleiflex.

I have a couple somewhere, but they're 'orrible big sticky things, which is why I've never disfigured a camera with one. With chrome cameras, I just write the information on the chrome with a soft pencil. The writing comes off if you lick your finger and rub. With black paint, a white wax pencil (Chinagraph, etc.) is good but messier.

Actually I very seldom need to do this because I use only a very few films, and can therefore use the film reminder dial on the back of the camera -- except on the M4-P, which is useless.

Cheers,

R.

I am so old I remember when this was a new feature - only the latest
35mm cameras had a "film reminder" box end holder on the camera back.

Some camera stores sold/gave away a stick-on vinyl version, sometimes
with the store's name printed on it, for older cameras not so-equipped.

Perhaps Porter's catalog offers this item, though it's not listed online.

I think leica goodies sell them, but they also just make them from some other stuff. If you're handy, you should be able to make something yourself

Thanks a bunch everyone!
The drawback to the tape technique is that you have to bring a pencil and eraser always with you. In this case it should be even better to write on a small notepad like a nice fellow advised.
The hotshoe technique is ok but on the rolleiflexes there aren't!
I will try and order that kaiser thing, thanks!

on my Rolleiflex I use paper clips to hold the piece of paper (the one that holds the roll closed ) on the strap.

I used the speed reminder (My Rolleiflex is a MX-EVS) to remember the speed I'm shooting at if it's not the usual one for the film.

I use filmtrackr.com

Free, and great if you have several film cameras that you use at the same time.
It also keeps track of your equipment, your film, your history, what's ready to be developed, ready to be scanned etc etc.
Here's how I'm looking today:

The "Hama Memo Holder". Used to buy them in quantity from B&H. Also peel them from old bodies at the used camera stores. You can use foam tape to re-do them. Leicagoodies used to make something similar. I've also rolled up masking tape and stuck the film box ends to the camera back. Whatever works for you.
