good news bad news dammit!!

first the good...the p and 50/1.9 are finally home.

and the bad...? the p is out of rf alignment, vertically that is...

the p looks great!
originally essex said they could do nothing about the the small dents in the body. i had added one to the 2 that were already there when i bought it, but they hammered (?) them out. not more dents but scars now. who cares about that? not me.
the finder is bright and the winder is smooth and the shutter sounds like home.

but focusing is off and i am such a chicken sh*t that right now i don't want to mess with even this simple procedure. damn damn damn!!

and the lens now collapses like new. i had forgotten how clean the glass was and i am now so looking forward to using it.
it fits perfectly on the iv sb where i think it will live permanently. it fits all the way into the body, making a nice compact package.

(because of the dim finder on the lll, i've decided to let the 28 with it's external finder live on it)

all in all i am pleased except for the need to fix the alignment.

everyone is home now, except the 100/3.5 which will probably show up while i'm in new york. kinda ironic as it's coming from there.

Can you invoke the repair warranty? If this is the camera that fell off your hands with a sinister "thud" a while ago... they should have considered the RF alignment.

Try... These people need to maintain their reputation. I'm sure they won't mind fixing it.

they did indeed work on the alignment as it was horribly off in both directions and now is only a bit off in one.
and it may have been fine when it left jersey.
truth be told the (oversized) box had a big dent in it and the camera was only in a baggie in the box filled with peanuts (styro). there needed to be more peanuts or a smaller box.

That certainly IS good to know. If the RF misaligned during transport, it was most probably due to poor packing. If not, then they did a sloppy job sending it back with a misaligned RF.

Joe, I can take a look at the RF alignment for you. If it's anything like the Canon 7 alignment, it'll be easy. Speaking of the 7... greyhoundman: Did you receive that thing yet, and did I indeed set the RF alignment on it correctly? I'd like to know if I'm as good as I think I am! 😀

isn't a rf adjustment a simple procedure. remove a screw - find the adjustment screw underneath - adjust till perfect...?

but the idea of sending it off again just after getting it back is more than i can deal with right now.

the camera is usable, it's just a bit off so it makes it somewhat disconcerting when focusing.

I hate it when they ship like that.
I always put the camera in a baggie, then wrap it with two layers of bubble wrap -
THEN put that in a thick layer of foam-peanuts and wrap with Red Green's favorite Duct Tape 😀

Odd.

It costs nothing to bubble wrap the camera, fit it in a small box, and then fit that into a bigger one filled with foam chips or whatever it's called.

The vertical alignment should be an easy task Joe, but if you want the truth, I also live with a bit of it on my own P. I think the required screw is hidden behind the bigger one on the front, just side of the VF window.

But happy to hear it's back home !

One of my Leicas came back from NJ with an alignment problem... but I'm planning on sending mine over to DAG instead.

Joe, I can take a look at the RF alignment for you. If it's anything like the Canon 7 alignment, it'll be easy.

It's easy, but it's completely different from a 7. The P has a 'Barnack-style' adjustment, via a rotating prism around the round (secondary) RF window; it's accessible once you remove the knurled chrome ring around the window. Unlike old Leicas, the Canon ring has a couple of slots in it, so you don't need to make a special tool to turn it; thin tweezers with the tips filed square work great.

Another vintage irritation: Rotating the prism to fix the vertical alignment will change the horizontal alignment slightly, so you have to redo the horizontal setting at infinity after you adjust the vertical. The horizontal alignment IS like a 7, via a tiny screw accessible after removing the larger cover screw at the lower corner of the viewfinder window.

the outtage is minimal at the close focusing range and increases as it heads to infinity.

this is such a piss off, i tell ya.
i'm thinking of cabbing it to jersey and kickin' some butt!

the more i think about the poor packing job, it was as if they were in too much of a hurry or something. the oversized box they used could have held 6 cameras in it but there wasn't enough peanuts in it to keep the box firm.

I can see that ... they sent my 7s and 50/1.2 to the wrong PO Box. I was about one shift away from it going back to Jerz.

And I still have that problem with the film advance lever. I want to send it back under the repair warranty, but I don't want to go through all that waiting and anxiety again.

OT, today I was trying to shoot a poster that was on an I-beam underneath an overpass. The poster was above me, and as I focused I noticed words lining up in part of the patch, but being fuzzy in others. I tried repositioning my eye, but it was difficult with glasses on. I tried to focus on other things farther away, and I didn't notice this problem. I was fairly close, about a meter, and was using a CV 35/2.5.

I hope nothing's wrong and that I'm only being a hypochindriac for my camera.
