M-body for under $1k = fantasy?

No (assuming M4/M5 or earlier), but the ones under $1000 sell quickly.

You just have to keep checking sites and be ready to jump quickly if a good deal comes up. For example, last week KEH had a M4P for around $750. It was sold within a couple of hours.

You can find a CL/CLE for way less if you're looking for M-mount. Additionally, you should be able to track down an M2/M3/M4 for around $1000, with the M4 likely the hardest to hit this mark. That said, don't give up.

When I asked Sherry she had said every camera on her site was sold. Don't think she keeps that section up to date.

Youxin doesn't sell cameras any more. He will suggest you talk to Stephen Tedesco who he works with quite a bit.

I'm new to all this. Everything I see advertised is north of $1200 or so. Is this the new standard?

Horatio, prices have continued to rise. I see a couple of M2 bodies on Ebay today at $850. Everything else is over $1k. No M3 under $1k. One beat M4 for $850. The most astonishing is the M4-2.... used to be able to get those for around $6-650.... now all over $1k. Yes it seems to be the new standard.

Yup, a Hexar RF woud be easy under that price as well as most of the Bessa's. The R3M and R4M would be harder though.

Yes. I scored my CL for $165. It's a beater with a dead meter, but I'm happy with it so far.

Well, I don't mind paying the market rates for something of good quality. I'm sure timing and knowing where to look will help. Been lurking at Fred Miranda the past couple of days. There's a lot of gear out there! I just need to do a little more research into which M-body I want.

Check some of the groups on Facebook. I've seen M3's and M2's for under 1K there recently.

As noted by some above, the price of decent M2, M3, M4, M4-P, M4-2, etc Leica M bodies is cyclical. It goes thru periods of being in the $900-$1100 range and then in the $1100-$1400 range. Right now it seems to be in the upper range, probably because it's very difficult to purchase a new film Leica M (M-A, MP), so the demand for the used ones are higher than at other times.

Good luck with your search.

Best,
-Tim
