It seems that all too often online we focus on the negative experiences we have with businesses, which are increasingly becoming impersonal now that we are no longer face-to-face. I recently had an interaction with Tamarkin Camera that was so refreshing I just feel like I need to share. I hope it is okay to post in this forum as they are a Leica only shop.

A couple of months ago I had a change in my eyeglasses that made me want to revisit an M as I could not longer really see the framelines in my IIIg. Being on a tight budget I was excited when I saw an M2 listed at Tamarkin in VG condition for only $449. I had some trepidation about buying an M2 at that price though as surely there had to be an issue with it. I sent an email to Tamarkin asking questions about the camera. I received a prompt reply with numerous pictures and reassurances from Dan, the rating was cosmetics only and it came with a warranty. With this in mind, I bought the camera. The M2 I received had a perfect rangefinder and seemed to function smoothly. The vulcanite had been replaced, but otherwise you could tell the camera had seen many adventures.

I went on a short vacation with my wife and brought along some slide film to try out my new toy. By the time I got the slides back it had been a few weeks since purchasing the camera. Unfortunately, there seemed to be an issue with the shutter curtain timing at 1/1000s. All shots at other speeds were fine, but something was off with the 1/1000s.

I sent an email to Dan explaining the issue and a scan to illustrate what I was talking about. I literally had a reply from him 5 minutes later saying they would do whatever was needed to make it right, whether that meant a refund, a repair, or an exchange. Also, he would reimburse any non-expedited shipping charges. Off the M2 went, back to Tamarkin.

Dan emailed me promptly upon receiving the camera back. It was a Friday and they would test the camera and get back to me either that Saturday or the following Monday. Monday arrived and I received an email from Dan offering to exchange for another M2. He said he personally took this one out over the weekend with some film and fully tested it. That Thursday I had the "new" M2 in hand. This new M2 was a definite step-up in cosmetics and he even included a soft release for me.

There was one little thing that definitely made the transaction over the top though. I had a little foam donut on the eyepiece of the other M2 to keep my glasses from getting scratched. It was a eBay cheapo from China that I had written off when I shipped back the old M2. No worries though as I had spares. Guess what, he had swapped out the eyepiece with the new M2, preserving my little foam donut!

Kudos to Dan and the team at Tamarkin! Your service and attention to even the smallest of details is over the top and deserves to be recognized.

Thanks for posting something positive! Not too many of us will do that, preferring to post negative things in our moment of pique.

I'm not a Leica person, but those that are, if they didn't know of Tamarkin, now have another place to consider when repairs are needed.

I have been doing business with Dan, and his father Stan!, since the early 1990s. Great people, excellent service, and an absolute pleasure to work with on any purchase.

No matter what I'm looking for in Leica gear, I always check Tamarkin.com first. 🙂

I live in Chicago, and I happened to be in the idea where the shop is. So I stopped in really nice little shop with a gallery. Dan is a super nice guy had a great conversation about photography and Leicas. Your right such a breath of fresh air. Dan has a passion for photography and actually does go out shooting. I highly recommend Tamarkin as well.

I bought my first M from Tamarkin, an M3. I had the same experience receiving a reply to my several questions, with photos, very promptly.

The camera had a problem on arrival, however, some form of intermittent light leak. No problem, just send it in, said Dan.

Tamarkin discovered that the problem was a piece of film behind the pressure plate which affected the shutter somehow sometimes. The film was removed and the problem, Dan wrote, had disappeared.

Unfortunately, when the camera returned after checkup the problem remained. Dan was very understanding and let me return it against a full refund on the warranty.

So I'm also happy with the service I received.

I called him last Friday. He was available to talk right away. He was willing to sell with my special requirements.

I send him my request by same day. Asking to bill me for one of his M2 cameras listed for sale.
And no reply back.
Maybe it was communication glitch with messaging service at his web-site.
I'm sure, if I call him back one more time he would help me.

But I gave my little money to another business later this week, just because they have more interesting M for my specific requirements.

Great story. I have had similar experiences with David Farkas down here in Florida at Dale Camera. Lets support these smaller shops that do a great job.

Yep! My purchased my used M9 from Dale Photo..David was a pleasure to talk and work with.. Also highly recommended Leica Dealer..

Agreed re: Tamarkin Camera, I recently purchased a used lens from him and the service and communication was top notch. Highly recommend Dan and his outfit.

Dan is a pleasure to buy from. It feels you're dealing with a friend. So far, I have only purchased one camera from him, but it was drop-dead gorgeous (and people have made comments on it): a Leica M5 in silver chrome, in box, with inserts. He shipped it promptly, it worked as described, and we were both satisfied. We're even Facebook friends!

It's a pleasure to read the story.

I purchased one lens from his several months ago on Ebay. The item has been very honestly and accurately described. Definitely I won't hesitate to do business with him again.

Have bought cameras from Tamarkin for 20 years. The son follows the father in being great to deal with. I have also had OUTSTANDING experiences with Sherry and a recent M9 purchase from Ken Hansen. Perhaps Leica just attracts fanatics who can't wait to spread the passion, either buying or selling.

My experience with Tamarkin has been outstanding and I would buy from them at any time with complete confidence. When I bought an M6 from them a while back they went the extra mile and actually took extra photos to show me exactly what it was like. My feeling now is one of complete trust and I already have my eye on something in their Connoisseurs Corner if it doesn't fly out the door too quickly. Great outfit...TW

Sorry to burst the bubble at this late date, but I recently had a BAD experience with Tamarkin. I purchased a beautiful Leica 1c set, which came with a FOCOS rangefinder. The camera, finder and case were great, but the rangefinder just did not work. I asked them if they would replace it with one that did work. They said I had to return the whole set, for some unknown reason, which I did not want to do. So I said I would have the rangefinder repaired at my expense and leave it at that. But they said that would void all warranty on the camera. That really didn't seem right.
