It seems that all too often online we focus on the negative experiences we have with businesses, which are increasingly becoming impersonal now that we are no longer face-to-face. I recently had an interaction with Tamarkin Camera that was so refreshing I just feel like I need to share. I hope it is okay to post in this forum as they are a Leica only shop.
A couple of months ago I had a change in my eyeglasses that made me want to revisit an M as I could not longer really see the framelines in my IIIg. Being on a tight budget I was excited when I saw an M2 listed at Tamarkin in VG condition for only $449. I had some trepidation about buying an M2 at that price though as surely there had to be an issue with it. I sent an email to Tamarkin asking questions about the camera. I received a prompt reply with numerous pictures and reassurances from Dan, the rating was cosmetics only and it came with a warranty. With this in mind, I bought the camera. The M2 I received had a perfect rangefinder and seemed to function smoothly. The vulcanite had been replaced, but otherwise you could tell the camera had seen many adventures.
I went on a short vacation with my wife and brought along some slide film to try out my new toy. By the time I got the slides back it had been a few weeks since purchasing the camera. Unfortunately, there seemed to be an issue with the shutter curtain timing at 1/1000s. All shots at other speeds were fine, but something was off with the 1/1000s.
I sent an email to Dan explaining the issue and a scan to illustrate what I was talking about. I literally had a reply from him 5 minutes later saying they would do whatever was needed to make it right, whether that meant a refund, a repair, or an exchange. Also, he would reimburse any non-expedited shipping charges. Off the M2 went, back to Tamarkin.
Dan emailed me promptly upon receiving the camera back. It was a Friday and they would test the camera and get back to me either that Saturday or the following Monday. Monday arrived and I received an email from Dan offering to exchange for another M2. He said he personally took this one out over the weekend with some film and fully tested it. That Thursday I had the "new" M2 in hand. This new M2 was a definite step-up in cosmetics and he even included a soft release for me.
There was one little thing that definitely made the transaction over the top though. I had a little foam donut on the eyepiece of the other M2 to keep my glasses from getting scratched. It was a eBay cheapo from China that I had written off when I shipped back the old M2. No worries though as I had spares. Guess what, he had swapped out the eyepiece with the new M2, preserving my little foam donut!
Kudos to Dan and the team at Tamarkin! Your service and attention to even the smallest of details is over the top and deserves to be recognized.
