New (cheaper) Leica Film Camera on the Way?

New Leica film camera?

New Leica film camera?

Leica Rumors reports one in the offing, a cheaper option to the MP and MA.

Since the MP is essentially a well-made M6 Classic with M3 advance lever, I'm at a loss as to how a lower-cost version would manifest.

Perhaps a compact CL-type body?

If true, kudos to Leica in light of Nikon and Canon's recent departures from their last film cameras.

Leica is probably looking at recent M6 prices and thinking that they can capitalize. I highly doubt $2000-3000, but maybe $4000.

Unless it's a re-incarnation of the Leica P&S cameras of the 1990's.

So, though I'm not in the market for a new film camera, who still makes film gear except Leica? Even including medium format?

Rollei?

Doubtful given the former's collaboration with Zeiss. They must have worked with Fujifilm toward the Sofort. Fuji in the past worked with Hasselblad on the Xpan format.

Why would the former collaboration with Zeiss matter?

Cosina makes M-mount lenses and produced m-mount, metered bodies up until 10 years ago. Makes a ton of sense IMO.

Perhaps, if they have the capacity to churn them out, The Bessas weren't the most rugged cameras, though they were lightweight and equipped with great rangefinders.

A P&S film camera makes the most sense to me; appeals to the hipster crowd and others uninterested in full manual operation.

For Cosina, I think the sticking point would be shutters. My recollection is that the availability of mechanically cocking shutters was what did their cameras in.

I wonder if there are any appropriate commercially available shutters in the market for rangefinder cameras?

Agreed. BH has waiting list for M-A. If Leica have enough of those who are willing to pay 5000+ USD for M-A, why do they need $2000 USD camera?

Cosina collaboration is my bet.

Why not. They used economy CT-1 chassis for Viotlander, Zeiss, Rollei and even digital Epson.

No. Wait. It is going to be KMZ Zenit labeled as R 2021 !
