I feel I've tried to take a fairly neutral approach by leaving the film to its natural look under the lighting conditions I created. However it was important to me that both sexes were treated the same. No forgiveness here.
I do prefer this version over the original, for me this image appears to present a true representation where the other appears to have had the sharpen or structure slide pushed up during post processing.
Either portrait works, individual taste for each of us likes.

... I was surprised just how aggressively Flicker's software has treated the image, the two versions I posted are both the same file. The former uploaded to Flicker and the latter to Ipernity ... flickers CEO probably thought it looked better like that on her phone eh?
Nice photo. But for me, the camera position and stare are well, not flattering -- kind of unsettling. And for me, the relationship of head to body remind me of a turtle. I do like the clarity of the eyes. Not a fan of the strong shadow by right (camera side) of nose and eyebrow. I like Rembrandt lighting, but with a bit softer transition. And I would prefer this photo to your avatar photo.
Nice shots Bob and sounds a good project. Like Chris says the shots aren't meant to flatter the subjects. What they do is show the subject more naturally and how they really look, whatever that look may be. Lookin forward to seeing the rest of the shots Bob.
I just wish I could take portraits half as good as these
Well done Bob - look forward to seeing the whole series. Interesting concept, but could you just have got away with a pair of tight shoes? (for your sitters, that is) 😉
