Hello, I just picked up what looks to be a nice canadian summicron 90/2 for $205 off of Ebay. which i think is a nice price if the lens is as good as it appears to be in the listing photos.

can anyone post samples of shots taken with this lens? I'll have my own soon enough, but i can't wait!

thanks, mike

I love mine but they are BIG and heavy, my guess is you'll want a grip if you don't already have one.
I've found that they really perform well at the bigger apertures, and have acceptable sharpness at slow speeds as long as you prop yourself when shooting.
First one is inside a dark car interior, Tmax400 1/30th @F2.8, second one is RFF member UncleBill, HP5+ 1/50th @F2, last one is Tmax400 1/250th @F16.

Good grief, Charlie Brown! Where were these deals when I battling my GAS attack?:bang:

Good luck & good photos!

$205???!!!! Holy crap. Please tell me it's the humungous one w. 48 or49 filter and tripod mount, not the 55mm compact one I paid $800 for last year.:bang:

I think you beat me out on that deal. I love my 90 Elmar so much I couldn't justify bidding up any more. Looks like you have a great piece of glass on your hands. I am sure you will be pleased. If not they go for more than that, and you can make some extra lens money.

You picked up a 90 Summicron for 205 frickin dollars!? You were born under a lucky sign my friend. I think that is like 10% of what I paid for mine new. Hold up, mine says made in Germany. Probably same thing though. Is it the ASPH version? I'm trying not to bang my head against the wall.

I wonder if it was the one I was looking at. The discription sounded great, the user lens, recent version too? My impression was that at worst maybe I could get a good deal and if it needed a CLA who cares. Sounds like you got that GREAT deal.

Oh no! Not already

Oh no! Not already

First: Hello. I'm very new to this forum. I bought my M6 about two weeks ago along with a 50 Summicron f2.

Yesterday, I bought a 90 Elmarit f2.8 serail 38xxxx, in mint condition, box case and papers. I paid $1,000.

Did I pay way too much? This find on ebay caught my attention, so I thought I would ask.

Yup that's the one...... good grab

Hi Alan, I have not been paying attention to Elmarit sales so I can't offer any words about your lens, but in mint condition with box and papers I am sure it will perform well.

I paid less than $300 for an Elmarit. Maybe yours is the new model. The Elmarit is a very sharp lens even with the older models. It has a nice overall profile.

Optically the 1st version 90 Summicron is a very classic Leica lens, I love its look wide open, very smooth 'bokeh'. Some folks talk about its size in the negative, but one of the reasons I enjoy lugging it around is that it fits in the hand so well and the weight settles it down for a steady exposure - after all that's what a fast 90 is for, right?, get as high a shutter speed as you can and you'll be surprised how 'sharp' this lens can be over a slower lens.

I also have the updated more compact second version. Optically its about the same, a better 'travel lens', but I find the smooth long focus throw of the earlier version is a big plus. Also I used the early version in a visoflex/SL mount for many years and it makes a good close-up lens stopped down and is a nice lens to see with on a ground glass for a change of perspective.

Can't beat the price!!! Way Cool

I've got some pictures around somewhere from the one I used to own, and may try to find them -- but I didn't do a lot of shooting with it once I saw its full-aperture performance.

It's sharp enough as fast '50s teles go, but when photographing light subjects against dark backgrounds, there's a distinct 'halo' around the subject. Some people may feel that this halo effect gives the lens nice "bokeh" and/or a pleasing quality to portraits, but I didn't like it. Unfortunately for me, since I did (and still do) a lot of photography of stage productions, most of my photos involve light subjects against dark backgrounds -- so I was looking at this halo almost all the time!

Fairly soon I wised up and switched to a 105/2.5 Nikkor and later a 100/2 Canon, both of which gave significantly crisper images at wide apertures.

So, an OK lens and undoubtedly pleasing to many, but not a world-beater from the Holy House of Leitz, IMHO...
