They mean the strap lugs' shape, I'd suppose.

I've heard and read: «Buddha ear», and «dog ear»; but IDK what's the German expression?

The really early Leica M3s had a little notch/bump on the front. Seen just below/in front the frame counter in that picture. Not sure at what serialnumber they ditched it.
