Taschen Publishing has recently published "documenta 12." This documenta 12 edition is an extract from the sum total of photographs shot by various artists.
Limited to 1,000 copies, the book retails for:

I'm going to have to give this a miss as could buy a lot of bonbons with 150,000 yen. I guess if you needed this you would want to pay in US dollars as the price is much cheaper than the other currencies. Taschen has a lot of other cool and inexpensive photo and art books though.

I only passed it along as a sign of the times.
When I was in the Photography Library at the International Center for Photography a couple of weeks ago, I came across a list of photography books that the ICP staff had prepared as "most referred to" or most used.
Here is a link to the list, and Amazon links to the books:

Some of the out of print ones are expensive, others are not.
Any suggestions for additions to the list?

to be fair, the "documenta 12 edition" is 13 prints. For $1000, not a shabby price.

Is there a single book from after 1987 in that list? Many of them are from the 30s and 40s, 60s and 70s. No doubt they are "important" but where's the contemporary stuff? Where's Araki, for one? Koudelka? Lachapelle? A limited list, for sure, and IMO not representative for current photography.
