Hi M5 fans,

My stock case arrived today--very nice, with a rear window, etc. Oddly, the bottom of the case is about 1/2 inch thick! This makes the thing bulkier than necessary. Is there some secret compartment in the bottom? Does anyone have any idea why Leitz did this? It just makes me want a Luigi case all the more. Sigh.

I had never paid much attention. While it's not exactly 1/2" thick, it is noticeably thicker than most everready cases. It certainly is stiff as a result.

Bubba looks kinda naked next to Bigfoot. If you hate it enough to buy a case from Lugi, I would like to talk about buying your factory M5 case.

These cases were meant to be sturdy. I recall that the bottom of my Canon VT's case had a strip of metal -- covered with thin leather -- on its bottom.

I stripped an M3 case once and found the same.

Hi Wayne,

As I measure it the bottom is exactly 1/2" thick from the bottom inside of the case to the bottom outside of the case.

Best,

Charlie

I own a regular usually not commonly favored Leica old "never-ready" case (full case).
Contrary to many Luigi and similar fine cases users, I prefer the standard, old and worn Leica's ever-ready case due to its sturdiness (it has some kind of metal shielding within leather cover), prefer bottom screw mount and certainly rear covered ISO dial window is a big advantage in my eyes over other cases.
Since I prefered the strap to get hooked to the camera lugs intead of the case (for re-loading convenience reasons) - I just cut two slots at the sides to reveal my M6's lugs ears. Admittedly, the case looks worn out and probably ugly for camera cases fetish players, but I have much less worries then if I had an expensive genuine, soft leather Luigi or similar cases feeling it is much more protected this way for hard environmental abuse (and I take it to every place with me, to some working, much less then clean and calm places). Also the easy detach of the upper cover makes it convenient to keep the camera protected overall when not in actual use...
