No connection with the company, just a happy customer:

Dell Inspiron 1501, dual core processors, 1Gb RAM, 80 Gb HD, CD/DVD drive, wifi card, XP

$499

Does it run OS-X? I doubt there are too many neo-pagan Buddhists @ Dell. Apple on the other hand...

(running, ducking, hiding)

Frank,
Thanks for the heads up! I didn't see quite that low a price for a US customer(me) but I should get my new laptop next week.
You must've heard my muttered cursing day before yesterday as the screen on my old Prosignia laptop died. After looking into repair costs--"Sure, we can fix that. $65 for labor. And $492 for parts. When do you want to bring it in?". So, I'd just started looking for a new XP machine.
The down side for you folks here at RFF is that I'll be able to do some editing of the 23 rolls of film I've shot here at Raquette Lake--and some of them will end up in my gallery here.:D
Thanks!
Rob

Happy to help, Rob. Looking forward to those pics.

Getting XP was a large factor. Vista is so new there'll be lots of fine-tuning needed (that XP has already gone through.) Vista is a RAM-hog. My Acer XP laptop does fine with 256Mb of RAM, Vista requires 1 Gb minimum.

Vista was/is a deasl breaker for me. Partly for the memory issues, partly for the newness, and also Vista apparently doesn't play well with some of the programs and hardware I use or want to get.
Plus, I generally do better buying the previous generation of this stuff--more capacity for less $.
The biggest change for me will likely be the screen; I'm moving up from a 800x600 screen to 1280x800. I am a little afraid to look at any photos I've previously posted:D

Ok, but why would you ever want to run with 256mb of ram? get as much as you can put in the laptop.. memory is cheap nowadays.

Also, I can tell you from my experience that 256mb of ram for XP is silly. I guess we have different standards for "runnin' fine"

ywenz, sure I wish I had more, but for a family guy merely getting a laptop for my personal use was already an extravagance, so I opted for a modestly spec'ed one.
The family already has a desktop and a laptop to share, this one was for me.

Anyway, the new laptop is my daughter's gr.8 grad present to help her in high school.
