I have not seen one of these in a LONG time. There is one on fleabay but the seller is asking around 475 for it. Is that resonable for this lens? I love the look of it but I have to figure that it will probably need a CLA to maintain its tip top performance for years to come. Are there any other lenses that have that sonnar look besides the , well, sonnar?

A good Canon 50/1.5 should run you around US 250-300. 475 must be the listing from Kevin.
Alternatives are the original Sonnars, the J-8, J-3, Nikkor 50/1.4, Nikkor 50/2, and the new ZM C-Sonnar. They are all similar but different.
Best,
Roland.

Roland is probably right about the typical pricing. However, I could not find one in that price range when I was looking to buy one last fall. Being anxious to get one, I ended up buying one from Kevin at a bit of a premium. Of course, buying from him meant that I had the assurance of it being in excellent condition. If this is the lens you want (gotta love that Sonnar look), then in my view it's well worth the price range Roland has quoted and then some. Not only does it have great imaging, but it's also built like a little tank. Made back when they really made things to last.

Yeah, I agree that $475 is too high. But I still think that $300 is too low. And Dan's website linked to above seems to agree. Sorry, guys, not trying to argue with you, and maybe I'm just too attached to mine, but I wouldn't sell it for that.

funny, these are scarce in the US, but not so in Japan. My Canon Lens Guide has it at $ 330 for Canon version, $ 260 for Serenar version

Interesting, Dan. Mine's a "Canon" version rather than a "Serenar" version. Maybe that's why I value mine more?

So the Canon 50/1.5 sells for more than the 50/1.4? From what I've be seeing, the 50/1.4 goes for about $235.

I think you, me, Brian and others might have helped pushing the price a bit over the last year ...
Kevin usually has cheaper ones on his website, too, with different condition.
Also, wrt glass condition he is very reliable, and sometimes it's worth spending
a few bucks more and be sure what to get ... YMMV.

Last year I paid $329 for a beat-up Canon 7 with a very clean 50 1.5. I saw it on the shelf at Adorama.

Dang. That has become a pricey lens. I might try a nikon 50/1.4 but it is probably even more ! I have a canon 50/1.4 and its great but i like the pics i have seen from the 1.5.

I bought that lens last week for $325 just received it today......condition is amazing, beautiful and clean and looks killer when it`s "wide open"
I also have both caps, flat UV Filter and the kool, but bulky original hood on it
I`ll be testing her out this Sunday with a very pretty model
using my 1946 "Half Race" Leica IIIC "stepper" loaded with some 400ASA Blk N Wht film
I can`t wait!!!!!!

A clean one sold here at RFF for $240 just this past weekend
- I did go after it but I was the second email
at that price I can afford to have a second one on my Leica IIIC - ok maybe I really don`t need it, I`m going to be trying out a f2.0 50mm Nikkor soon so that`s going to take up some time on the IIIC for a while
It`s safe to say these lenses are holding their own at $250 to $350 at the moment
....those tricky 40mm filters are a real pain to find, lucky I have a "Flattie" UV already on mine

$240? Argh. Not that I have that much at the moment, but still perhaps I could have sold a couple of things quickly...
I love my Canon 50/1.8 but I really want to complement it with a 50/1.5 for the (slightly) higher speed & more importantly, the Sonnar fingerprint.
I'll probably end up making a deal with Kevin Li of Kevincameras for one. I did a very nice deal with him for an inexpensive Serenar 28/3.5 that had somewhat chewed up chrome but excellent glass. Perhaps... ?

Yes, I bought the <EP> lens from Kevin like two months ago
*details posted above*
for $325 and it`s a wonderful lens - my FAVORITE to work with
and the "Sonnar" signature is amazing I love it
I just bought the rare "Auto Up" for it from New Zealand of all places, can`t wait to try that thing on it as well....
These are getting harder and harder to find, even Kevin doesn`t have as many as he used to have and evilbay`s only had like 2 of them in the past 3 months - news from Japan says they are very uncommon and mostly GI`s bought them originally in the 1950`s, so keep searching those garage and estate sales!

Wow, $240 strikes me as way too low for this lens. And $350 still sounds like a great deal, particularly from Kevin since you know what you're getting, etc. Heck, I bought mine from Kevin last year and paid more than that. Still, when another rff member recently expressed interest in buying it , I did not want to sell it for even as much as I had paid Kevin. I consider myself lucky to have it, with a hood that fits it and a couple of the hard to find filters for it. And if anyone has any more filters to sell I would be very interested. In the meantime, I have no desire to sell mine and consider it a real gem of a lens at any price under $500.
