Bear in mind that you will have to do some some trial wrapping of the curtains and ribbons to find an approxiamate starting point. When in place in the camera body, the curtain laths should be exactly overlapped and just inside the 24 x 36 opening.

I think I'll buy new curtains from sibir_sergey (Blyatnikov). He's got them cheap, and has also other parts I could use... and some very handsome black painted FED-2s... GASsssssssss 😉

One member here was so kind and sent me some curtain material. I made new laths and glued the curtains already. But straps are making me trouble... I used a regular ribbon from "tailor's" (?) shop and it seems it's too thick. As the shutter is cocked, the shutter curtains overlap increases... but maybe this isn't because of the ribbon... it might be because the strap rollers above and below the main drum are larger diameter than the drum itself...

One of my Fed-2c's is with Oleg for CLA, and another is in the mail from a top-rated FSU seller. I don't know about the 3a, however one well known repairman considers these cameras "fairly rugged and easy to work on." Famous last words?

That is correct. When the shutter is fully wound, the laths should overlap exactly.

Good news: I just bought some parts FED-2 bodies from Kim Coxon. They'll be here in a week or so, so I can continue this crazy project 🙂 I think I'll try to transplant the shutter curtains with the rollers and all the parts they are glued to...

Hi all,

just writing to let you know I managed to put it together. Finally.


Here is the result:

I did not take many pictures during the assembly, because I usually work on cameras in the evening after I return from work or from school. Often until 1 or 2 a.m.

But I'd like to write a short how-to about this... if I find the time to do so.

The camera is almost complete. I have yet to fine-tune the shutter tension. Unfortunately I was not able to make it work 100%. The fastest slow speeds (1/60 and 1/15) are too fast (they don't engage the slow-speed escapement). The rest of slow speeds and all fast speeds work fine.

And again, it's missing the RF window bezel 🙁 Is there anyone willing to donate this part? I can pay for the shipping. Thanks in advance.

The 1/15 should engage the slow speed mechanism and the 1/60 should contact it by the smallest margin but not really wind it. One thing to be aware of on the knob-wind FSUs is that the 1/15th is often a little variable. You have to wind the shutter very firmly to ensure that the mechanism actually does wind to the correct position, otherwise the speed varies from frame to frame. It's possible to adjust the mechanism very slightly on its mounting screws but if that fails you'll have to disengage one of the pinions and re-synchronise the relationship between the pin on the largest gear and the cam under the mechanism. That would be quite tedious, unfortunately!

you know i have a good looking fed3a that i took apart about a year ago, to fix the shutter, and it still lies around in pieces, because i can't figure out for the life of me how to make the freaking mechanism work. slow speeds aren't slow, and fast aren't right. looks like you might have a similar problem, So if someone has some tips or links here about fixing shutter mechanism that would be awesome.
