Left My R-D1 On Overnight...Battery Flat?

Left the R-D1 on (accidentally) last night. Thought it shouldn't be a problem, because the power time-out setting was 5 minutes. However, the battery was flat when I tried to turn it back on. I'm a little puzzled by this. Have others experienced this? Do the power time-out settings not fully power the camera down? No biggie, and a good lesson to learn under circumstances where it doesn't matter.
 
I did the same thing last week and left the R-D1 on accidentally overnite. But my battery was fine and the auto-off seems to have done its job.

Why not do a test by fully charging your battery and leaving the camera on and then checking back the next day to see if you have that problem again, cos it really shouldn't happen.
 
I have never left my R-D1 on over night, so I can't really say. However, it does seem to power down when I leave it on for more than a few minutes. How does yours work in that circumstance?

Mine does indeed power down after about the right time (haven't checked against a watch), so I was surprised by the next-morning battery-flat issue. Maybe a wonky battery, though wonky camera electronics seems more likely (ugh?).
 
How old is the battery? Is it an OEM battery? Some of my non-OEM batteries die quick. Was the camera in your bag and something was depressing the shutter button midway (hence keeping the camera on?)
 
OEM, new (as far as I know - came from Epson with the camera last week).

The camera was just sitting on the desk, so I don't think it's the issue that I experienced once or twice with an M6 after I first got one, where the battery dies after the camera has been stuck in a bag while left powered on. :bang:

I just got a 1500 mAh Lenmar, which I'll charge up tonight and maybe test later this week under the same conditions to see what happens.
 
The R-D1 does not fully power down at the timeout setting when switched on. If you look at the needles they do not quite get to the 'Null Point' dots at timeout, but they eventually do return to the 'Null Points' after 30 minutes, this (if I remember correctly) is independant of your timeout setting. I assume, but do not know that it then draws no more power from the battery.

Definitely repeat it with the Epson battery fully charged.

I was careful to make sure both were fully charged. Actually, the Epson battery had had the benefit of a few cycles, so I don't know what's up with that.

As for your second observation, I admit I was VERY relieved to find the Lenmar battery OK this morning!!!
 
Looks like it's definitely some battery issue. I clicked off exposures until each battery was dead. After 3x 155-157 exposures (which filled a 2GB card shooting Raw+JPG) the Lenmar was still pretty good. The Epson made it only to about 2 1/2 full cards. (Same card, erased after it was full.) The Lenmar, which I got from Staples, is labeled the same as the Epson spec (3.7v, 1500mAh). I would have thought Epson would throw in a new battery with an otherwise as-new refurb, but perhaps not...

I don't think they have any new batteries (in the US at least). The Epson web site has had them listed as discontinued for several months now.

That maybe the problem with the Epson Battery. I doubt Epson have had any batteries made under their own brand in the last 18 months and Li (Lithium)-Ion batteries deteriorate whether used or not. My Epson battery is 2.5 years old, it still works acceptably, but is not as good as some more recent 1500 Mah alternatives now.
