Removing the top plate of an M2 with button, How???

Hi there, need some help on removing the top plate of a Leica M2 button rewind (not lever!)


I just found an old body that needs some cleaning and may be a new color.

My problem is that I never taken apart an M2 with button rewind. So I removed and unscrew everything except this button that seems to not allow me to remove this top cover.

Can someone help me with that?

If you don't know what you are doing you'll turn an otherwise high dollar camera into an expensive paper weight..

My advise is to send it to a repairman...

I understand there is a trick, tool, or technique to reinstalling the screw in the button. I'd research that before I disassemble the camera.

Actually it is not the first Leica I will restore. I had an M2 and 3 completely repainted and cleaned. I try to get busy and have a lots of fun (I am also learning to swear in several languages, it helps a lot).

So no risk on my side to transform an expensive camera in a paper weight, thanks anyway for your consideration. I will be careful.

I guess I was a bit tired and upset when I posted the question.

My problem is to remove the rewind lever which actually on this camera is a button (early M2). This button seems to block the removal of the shell. The top plate is already gone.

So it seems that the shell is attached to the housing by the rewind button.

I am sure there is a way and of course I have no documentation on this model.

I wonder if someone knows where I can find (free or buy) a service manual online. I need to resolve it soon, cannot wait to order something that will arrive after I have transform the camera in a flying iron...

The instructions linked to above mention that removing the retaining ring around the rewind shaft could be tricky - is that maybe what you're having trouble with? They suggest making a special tubular tool. I realise that's not too much help to you though...
