A Three Year Old Child Takes Photos

When I went to Portugal, I visited with my cousin Michel who has a daughter who just turned three. She wanted to play with my M3 so I set the shutter speed and aperture and taught her how to look through the viewfinder, focus and press the shutter button. She took a photograph of her grandfather.

I don't think it turned out too badly. She moved the camera quite a bit as she pressed the shutter-button, hence the camera shake. I found it interesting that she did not place her grandfather in the middle of the shot.

Her parents were afraid that she might damage the camera. So that was the only photograph she took.

Funny thing to me is that these photographs look as though they were taken as stills from a movie taken through someone's eyes. As if someone with a camera were standing inside her eyeball and snapping pictures randomly as they walked along.

Kind of cool.

I will try encourage Dana to take more photos. Maybe she gets some interesting images one day. 🙂

My father did the same.

My father did the same.

Congrats, Raid. My father did the same for me (only instamatic intead of digital) and I will never thank him enough. By the time I was 8, he actually lent me his (now mine) Contax IIIa quite often! No, I didn't get to be a great photog, but ended up with a lifetime hobby.

My own kids, kidding around:

I think I was six or seven, perhaps eight,
he gave me his Yashica SLR (fully manual),
and charged me with being the family photographer.

Likewise, it has developed into my almost lifetime hobby.

Little kids can become great photograqphers. My father taught me to use his 35mm SLR when I was 8 yrs old, and he got me one of my own when I was 11. My own son got interested in my cameras when he was 3. I didn't want a 3yr old playing with expensive cameras so i got him a Fuji Quicksnap Flash. He learned it fast, even knew when to turn the flash on and when to shoot without it and did great compositions. He went through a bunch of those cameras for a little over a year, until I got him an autofocus 35mm point n shoot (A Canon Owl). He did great work with that, loaded his own film, learned to do self portraits with the self-timer. He is 10 now and has a digital camera now. If he lived out here in santa fe with me I'd let him use my D70. He's back in Indiana with his mother so unfortunately I can't be there to teach him, but when he comes out here next summer I am going to let him have the D70 if he wants it cause I'll have time to teach him to use it then.

What a beautiful thread! I've let my twins play with my, ummm, spare DSLRs since they were about 5. It's great to see what they're interested in, and what it looks like from their perspective. And it's a good way to use Canons and Nikons 😀

Their yield from using my Ms is somewhat lower due to the lack of AF/AE. 🙂
