Hi all.

This seems to be the only place in the world that can share my particular joy this week: I bought an R-D1.

It seems to be problem-free so far, though I have yet to take it out and give it a real work-out. So far all my portraits at close range are razor-sharp.

It came with three lenses, a 28mm Skopar f/3.5, a 35mm Ultron f/1.7, and a 50mm Nokton f/1.5.

Blasphemous as this may be, right now I actually like it better than my M8... but that's always the case with the newest toy, isn't it? I especially like that everything has a little dial and is clearly visible without having to dig into some kind of digital menu. I'm sure I'll discover that my M8 files are ultimately better, but for now I'm quite happy.

I've updated the Firmware to 2.0, no issues with that.

It even came with a Luigi half-case in Rallye-Brown, the same I have for my M8, so now they're both fashionably attired for the season.

I guess I now have a complete collection of digital Rangefinder cameras.

That's all, just thought I'd share my joy.
 
Hello Iron Flatline - glad to hear you're enjoying it - I don't have an M8 to compare, but coming from a large amount of film experience, I was very impressed with the RD-1 when I got one a couple of months ago. I use mine almost exclusively for portraits (mainly of my small children), using my other M cameras for other stuff (street, etc.)

Because kids move around so much, now I can fire off maybe 10 frames and pick the best one for The Grandparents and Other Relatives & Friends, whereas before I would have to either waste alot of film (and time preview scanning), or I wouldn't shoot enough and not get a really good frame.

Anyway, would like to hear your thoughts on RD-1 compared to M8 image quality once you've owned both for a while.
 
I had an RD1 and I now have the M8. To be honest I loved them both and comparing them would not be easy. I personally did not like the shutter cocker, but apart from that It was brill.
 
I have an M8 and I would being lying if I didn't sit here look curiously at every R-D1 that floats through the classifieds.
Then I remember if I had money to spend it would probably go to another lens. I just can't see owning both making sense unless I guess if you need a back up?

I've convinced myself my kit is lacking without two M8's! Hah! Dilusional!
 
Congratulations. I have an RD1 and an M8 and I find it difficult to choose between them. However, on an emotional level the RD1 is way ahead of the M8 - the RD1 feels like an analogue camera, especially with the LCD turned in whereas the M8 feels like a bloated P&S 😛 - not at all like an film M, but the M8 (chrome) is prettier.

In real use there isn't much between these cameras up to A3/A3+, but if you need to print beyond that the M8's greater MP and lack of AA filter would probably show an edge (pardon the pun) as it probably would in a highly detailed scene. However, whenever I've done any sort of test I haven't seen any marked difference.

Ultimately, what you're getting with the M8 is a more robust VF/RF, longer EBL and most importantly support. What you're getting with the RD1 is as close to a film camera as a digital can be.

Thanks. Just got to remember not to bump the RD1 on way down otherwise I'll have to adjust the VF/RF again 😀

Yar! That was me. I convinced myself I need a back-up for the long photo-trip to Cambodia and Vietnam coming up in February...
