There is an article by Anthony Lane called Candid Camera - The Cult of Leica in the current New Yorker (available online):

Note: They usually keep things on line for a week to a few weeks only.

Thanks for this; I'm looking forward to it. Though I did see this morsel: "...durable, companionable, costly, and basically unchanging, like a spouse." Don't think I'll be quoting THAT line at home.

So this will presumably be in this week's magazine to be delivered? It is not in the current issue.

It is listed in the Table of Contents for the September 24th issue. I don't know when exactly that gets to newsstands or subscribers. So this will presumably be in this week's magazine to be delivered? It is not in the current issue.

A lot in the article to absorb, as ever with Anthony Lane's articles . He used to be the film reviewer for The Independent newspaper in the UK before he went to the New Yorker (which I never get to see) and I hadn't realised how much I'd missed his style. He neatly captures the inherent reasons why I suspect many of us value the cameras so much as well as the desire to capture something of our own of the world. I too have a beat-up Nikon FE that I love, but I never took photos with it as I do with my Leicas.

Late in the article Mr. Lane described the M8 shutter sound as a "kiss" -- a term he referred to earlier related to a film M.
I wonder what word he would have used if before he had ever experienced the sound of an M3 under the same circumstances.

Anthony Lane is a wonderful writer who can make entertainment out of the dullest films... in fact, his reviews of awful films usually more engaging than his reviews of bad ones.
Somewhat worrying that working for the NEw Yorker only provides sufficient income to buy a D-Lux.. maybe they make him buy his own tickets.

Lane, as always, does stellar work. As a subscriber, I look forward to that issue.
However, I fear that far too many people, after reading the article, will be seized with Leica lust and drive the price of pre-M8 Leicas through the roof. And here I was, patiently saving for an M-series...

Well. he didnt's extol the virtues of the M2 too much so that might still keep those prizes at a reasonable level! Great read though.
Any of you living in N.Y. had a chance to see Richard Kalvar's "Earthlings" show at the Leica Gallery yet?

Very sentimental consumerism.

Good read. It does a nice job of capturing the lure and legend of the Leica.
A few small inaccuracies here and there, but nothing to get bent out of shape about.
