Hi Folks,
I found this slide at the bottom of a slide tray box the other day. It belonged to a former owner, and I was just going to toss it. Then I looked closer. The owner had written "St. Martin's church, Canterbury, England, June '68" on it. It struck me, staring at the vibrant almost 40-year old slide, why I love photography. A picture captures a moment in time and in so doing makes us aware of it, as if time itself were some invisible substance rushing past us, flushing our lives forward. Stop! So, what should I do with the slide now that it's provoked this silly romanticism in me?

If you can, try to send it to the church...I'm sure it's still there and they would love to see something from their historical past...

Make a print of it, and mail it to the church -- keep the slide. It's a prety nice shot.
Alternatively, travel there next weekend/month/whenever, and see if you can find the axact spot -- make it a mystery photo outing.

Great suggestions, thanks. I've thought of a short story to write around discovering this old slide, and may yet mail it to the church in question. Thanks for the input.

You could take another photo in the same place today and nothing would have changed.

Yes, take a picture at the same spot using approximately the same film type, print them side by side, make a pretty cool diptych.

Return the slide to the person who took it. You should know where you got it.

I would say the same. Ask the person if they have would like their slide back. If so give it to them. If not keep it.
I would hope that if someone found one of my slides (and i was still alive) and they knew that it had come from me they would send it back to me too.

June 1968? Canterbury? At the time that slide was taken, about 50 miles away my Mum was eight months pregnant with me. Not important, of course not, but a moment in time was captured. Please don't throw it away.

Nice fix. I've never heard of lightzone, guess I'll have to look that one up. As for the suggestions of returning the slide, my wife actually bought those slide trays off Ebay and surprised me with them several years ago. Honestly not sure I can still trace the original owner. But it's worth a try. I actually like the idea of sending a print and the slide to the church as a way of spreading that feeling of "neat, we're all connected in some way."

sooner, did they win this weekend ?, I'm too mad about Oregon to look in the sports section. Yes, LightZone is really nice for some applications. You can 'freeze' a zone (an Ancel Adams zone, not an area zone) and work with others. On this one I quickly isolated the bright area in the upper left and then worked on the dark areas to lighten them. Your wife sounds wonderful.

I forgot on their WebSite (lLightZone's) they have tutorials they are quick and good. Will (aka shadowfox) showed me how to get LightZone, for Linux, free for your Windows computer. I have all of his directions if you are interested.
