Elmarit 135mm focus problem with Leica M5

Hi,
I recently buy an Elmarit 135/2.8 (with bugeyes) . When I use the
lens with my Leica M5 and focus, I have a problem. It use an 90mm
frameline instead of the 135mm. Also, the Coincidence (double image)
focusing is not sharp. I can do the focus on the horizontal side but
no in vertical. I know these lens do only horizontal focus, but the
focus on vertical are not sharp. I use my 35mm/50mm/90mm with no
focus problem. I think this can be the Elmarit 135mm? Someone has
the same problem? The 135mm is in very good shape with no problem.

They may be a problem with the lens/camera. The 135mm framelines should come up when mounting the lens. You might want to bring them to a repair service and have them look things over. Since you have no other problems with other lenses on your M5, there may be a problem with the Elmarit.

It's perfectly normal for the 90 framelines to come up. Since the goggles have a 1.5X magnification, it actually gives the correct framing for 135. Can't comment on the rf patch problem as your description is hard to follow. It's not unusual for these lenses to have an rf patch alignment error given the optical design of the goggles. Fortunately, it's a very easy fix and for those that want to DIY, I've seen posts before explaining how to do it on this forum or photo.net. Once adjusted, it stays that way unless bumped or damaged. One of the best 135's ever made, just big and bulky. If you decide to send it off for adjustment, make sure you also send the camera for an exact match in rf adjustment to the body.

The 90mm frameline is correct.

The apparent problem is likely to be either:

1. Your RF is out of alignment, but you don't notice it until you attach the Elmarit because the VF/RF magnifier on the lens (1.5x) makes it easier to see that it's out of alignment

or

2. The "goggles" on the Elmarit are out of alignment (in effect, sort of "cross-eyed").
