Elmar 50/35.5 & Bessa R

So a 50/3.5 Elmar won't collapse fully into a Bessa body. I'd rather not go the tape route, so can anyone tell me the reliability of this lens in a camera bag when it's extended?

(never handled a collapsible Leitz 50, and am not sure what it takes besides a twist and a push to collapse it.)

My girlfriend uses these black hair rubber band things, its like black cloth on the outside and several rubber bands inside. I double one up on the end of the lens and then the lens wont hit the back of my r2a when collapsed. I also found that if you focus the lens to its closest focus it will collapse all the way without hitting (just). You might want to keep the back open and use B to keep the shutter open to see if its the same on your R, the problem with this idea though is that if the focus changes in your bag then it will hit the metal ledge.

Oh, and the lens....its great, I have the red scale version, but the lens cap wont stay on it, so I use another rubber band around the camera and lens to keep the cap on, then I got a zeiss planar.

Thank you for the info! I really would like to collapse the thing, and am planning on trying it with 'B' selected. Thank you again for reminding me to rack the lens all the way out to closest focus.

Just a thought: Your gf has an M-mount Bessa, and I'm wondering if that 1mm worth of adapter makes a useful difference. Screw mount bodies w/ SM lenses...I dunno.😕

No it doesn't - the lens to film distance is identical in both cases (it has to be, or it won't focus properly).

You're right. Wether it's an M or E39, the registration's got to be--28.8 or someting? (I wonder if there's a backstory as to how Barnack arrived at that distance.)

no difference, and I guess I could have written that more clearly, I stole my gf's hair thing to stick on my bessa, but she stole my canon 17-40 and I stole her 5D, so I guess we are even.


Also something to keep in mind when you collapse the lens is to keep the barrel clean on the outside so you dont get any nasty scratches on it
