What is under it?

Don't know for the M7 but I removed the dot of my M6 once (carefull with the razor blade though, I managed to nick the black chrome down to the brass). Underneath the red dot there's an opening, in the shape of the triangle, through which you can adjust the rangefinder. The camera looked butt ugly with the dot removed, plus I am sure it would suck dust in. I was lucky enough to replace it with a LHSA black dot. I love it!

I used a trick gleaned from the web - take a wooden toothpick and rotate the dot back and forth until the glue gives way. No marring!
 
Under my dot on the M6TTL there's an ugly hole with an adjustment-screw inside. So the dot protects the inner of the rangefinder from dirt and dust.
 
You need to be very careful. If you don't do it just right you'll release all the "Leica Glow" through that little hole.
