Leica M (M7/MP) + 24 mm: framing etc.

I am longing to buy a second M body and a 24 mm lens, but I have a couple of questions (besides how best to rob a bank). In order of importance: (1) I understand that I will be needing the external viewfinder to do the framing, but what's up with the in-camera VF magnification? Does it make sense to go for an 0.58 body and use the outer VF edges for framing? (2) If so, what about resale value? I guess it's easier to sell an 0.72 body isn't it? (3) What's your experience with the various M-mount 24's (okay this is a brrrroad question sorry)? I have read some reviews around the net, but I have come to know some of the RFF'ers and their work and would therefore greatly appreciate your comments as well.

Hi Amoz,
I use a 25mm Biogon on my .72 M's and I didn't do any test shots to figure out what really is in the frame when I just use the edges of the viewfinder. A thing that I wanted to do when I initially bought the lens. When I happen to have some money to waste I'll go and get one of the great Zeiss finders.
W/o the finder you'll loose the advantage to see more than the frame lines but you can work w/o it. Once you figured out you really love your 24, get a finder. Or if you just use it once in while you'll end up using it w/o.
As for the .58 mag. finder: If the favorite FL is 50 and smaller go for it. Usually resale of special mag. version is a bit higher but you'll first need to find someone who will go it, which might be more difficult.... hope this helps.

Icebear has it right: The Zeiss finders are superb. I use the Leica 24mm ASPH and the ZM 21mm 2.8 Biogon. I saved and bought the Zeiss 21mm finder (along with a diopter corrective lens). With the 24, I just guess-estimate inside the viewfinder's bright lines. It works, and the viewfinder really makes using the 24 and the 21 enjoyable.

Just be careful, with either lens, to keep the camera as level as pussible; otherwise, you'll get the telescoping verticals.

The .58 entire VF is darn close for thhe ZM 25. I did a test with the Leica 21-24-28 finder, the ZM finder and the .58 VF and found the VF to be quite accurate. My 28 lines are excellent, and the entire VF is usually right. The ZM finder was best at closer distances.

amoz I use 0.72x and 0.85x M7s but I got an R4A for the 24/2.8 ASPH. The R4 is a unique and very practical body for lenses 21mm thru 28mm IMO.
