In the interest of trying to protect my gear from dust / injury, I want to have body & lens caps on my gear.
Like all things Leitz, anything OEM is pricey.
Does anyone have strong feelings about the aftermarket caps available on eBay and from some of the camera dealers ?
I got a couple of aluminum caps from Midwest Photo a few weeks ago; they are made in India, and look the same as those available on eBay... I have a slight fear about them "shedding" bits of aluminum as they are threaded on & off the camera / lenses...
Anyone prefer plastic over aluminum?
Should I just cough-up the $$$ and by OEM Leitz ?
Thanks...

Ever since I lost the cap to one of my old Canon lenses and found out a used one runs about $20 I have gone the non OEM route.
Another possible source is local or nearby fleamarkets, camera stores and/or repair shops, etc. In a pinch, I have used caps from jars and pill bottles. I have picked up really cheap alternative caps from these sources. I have some funny combinations like a black aluminum Yashica cap on the hood of my crome 135 Nikkor.
I also have a number of the clip on plastic caps that I like.
In most cases I have the original caps, but many times they stay at home.

I forgot about the UV filter option. Sometimes I do that as well - at least for the ones that I have filters for.

Filters are good replacements for front caps, but what do you people do about rear caps?

Cameras. . .
One camera for every lens -- one lens for every camera. No need for rear caps or body caps

Lens Caps
Hi, I found that if I cant get hold of custom lens caps or consider them too expensive for what they are I make my own from thin card and masking tape, they do the job and cost virtually nothing. Ive done the same with lens hoods, you can tailor make hoods to suit the lens and painted matt black they muster!!

For what size do you need the hood? I think I still have some plastic fake Leica ones for 42mm outer size (summicrons etc.). Still have some plastic milk caps as well. Or any other condiment cap.

For rear caps I have found pill bottle caps that fit. But maybe thats because when you get to be my age or live in a family with all sorts of allergies and things, I have had a larger stock to choose from. They may not fit perfectly due to thread pitch and such, but I have found some that work. Just make sure if they are the child proof variety, that they aren't adult proof.

My "need list":
Hoods: to fit: Elmar 50mm; Elmar 90; Elmar 135; Hektor 135.
Summicron 50; Summar 50
Filters: UV filters to fit the above
Polarizers to fit the above.
Which filter adapters are necessary to adapt things like the Elmars to, say Summar or Summicron-sized thraed-in filters...
It';s nice to get Leitz stuff, but I need functional things right now, so I'm okay w/ aftermarket, as long as it gets the job done...
I will check-out the inventory of bottle caps at home.
I just tried my India LTM body cap on my black II; smooth as butter...
