Dear all,
this is my first post on rff & i am very proud to do that! so i got a leica m3 which works well but i found that the zm 50 is kind of bulky. so i bid and won on an elmar 2.8 in m mount. problem: it comes w/ no cap. on ebay it is easy to find caps which say that they are leica compatible & there is this beautiful leica engraving on it... i don't know exactly why but i would prefer to have something more discret w/ no leica on it...
on the b&h website, they sell push-on caps of every size.
they have for instance schneider caps and the description says
thanks a lot

Plastic, push-on 40mm lens cap. For any camera or enlarger lens, binocular, tele-, micro-, or spotting scope lens. Measure the outside diameter of the lens barrel. Order the size that is 1 or 2 millimeters larger than the size measured.
so my question is: could someone who has an elmar 2.8 tell me the exact size in mm of the lens barrel? i know it is 39mm, but i thing that this is the inside of the barrel... anyway, if someone could double check, it would of the greatest help!
thanks a lot

39mm is the filter thread diameter, as far as I know, so yes it's the inside of the barrel. The external diameter of mine appears to be 41.5mm. (Mine is the current version - I don't know if the older version is any different)so my question is: could someone who has an elmar 2.8 tell me the exact size in mm of the lens barrel? i know it is 39mm, but i thing that this is the inside of the barrel

Welcome to RFF and congratulations to your camera and lens.
Standard Leica push-on caps for Elmar/Summicron/E39 are A42 size - 42mm, the outside barrel of Elmar is cca 41mm.

When I'm hunting for a cap, I go to the KEH.com website. They will have a used cap, and they will I.D. it by the lens it belongs with. BTW the 2.8 Elmar uses the same cap as the 50mm And 35mm Summicrons, the 90mm ELmarit, etc., so there are plenty around!

Congrats on the camera + lens.
There are some good replica lens caps available in chrome or black, metal
or plastic, on ebay.
42mm as said above.
Roland.

I dodge the push on caps. If you use Leitz filters their od is not 42mm, and the caps don't stay on securely. For me it's 39mm snap caps. Stu

I have the same problem as Stu. If you use a 39mm filter, the 42mm cap fals off. So, whats the solution for those of us using a 39mm filter? What size cap?
