I recently won a Hexanon 28 on eBay, which I've tried out and seems to work great. But just today I noticed that the front-most ring of the lens -- with the red dot showing what aperture has been selected -- can be rotated on my lens. In fact, when I screw on the hood, it rotates until the hood is screwed on all the way. Is that normal? Seems to defeat the purpose of the red dot, which I would assume should be stationary, no? I'm inclined to keep the lens anyway, unless someone here tells me this is a possible sign of something seriously wrong.

I'm at work but that certainly doesn't sound right. Will take a look at mine later but what you say about the index mark staying in the same place is correct.

Mine definitely does not do that.
I haven't had the 28 long, but I think the build is among the best I've ever had - and I've gone through a lot of lenses during the past 18 months in my quest for a perfect kit.

Bummer. Get a refund. Start over.

No doubt the seller claimed it was functioning perfectly. Minty. All that drivel.

Sometimes "winning" on ebay isn't exactly like the TV commercials.

Thanks, guys. I have written to the eBay seller asking him to either pay for a repair by CRR Luton or to give me a refund. We'll see...

A happy ending. The seller agreed to pay for the repair, and it was done very quickly by CRR Luton (at a quite reasonable charge). So hopefully all is now well with my Hex 28.

Nice to hear that things worked out as they should have. The seller deserves lots of positive feedback for doing the right thing.
