any thoughts? my reason for asking is, I read on a website posting about the 40 1.4 S.C. (single coat) there was a suggestion, "that there is more to B&W photography than sharpness" or something to that effect.

For me, tack sharp IS the main thing in my type of work. I really like the idea of the 40 1.4 (multi coat) but if there are some sharpness issues, that precludes me from considering it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I had the SC version and never found it wanting for sharpness. The attached pic was either at f1.7 or f2.0.

The sharpness would be the same with both versions: it's the contrast (as I understand it) that varies very very slightly.

The SC is commonly said to better than the MC for B&W.

I disagree and use the SC for color and love the 'old fashioned' look.

The 40mm Nokton is a gem! I have the MC version and am incredibly pleased with it.
Bokeh is very nice as well. I am very happy with it's B&W performance as well.

Real BW shooters don't make sharp pictures 🙂 joking
imho, MC vs SC is a pure marketing thing. Look to the prices - SC is more expensve, but in real life (from manufacturing standpoint) it should be cheaper.
So, I think if there was a "blind test" between two versions, average person hardly can notice the difference
