M8 Problems Poll

I think it could be interesting to know how many of us have had any problem with our new M8 that needed service under warranty or change by our dealer.

So the answers are simple:

- No, my M8 never needed to be sent to service or substituded.

- Yes I had to send my M8 once to sevice under warranty or was changed once by my dealer.

- Yes I had to send twice or more times my M8 to service under warranty or had to be changed more than once by my dealer.

Of course service because drop or damage is not the subject of this poll.

oh to hell with it, im interested as a prospective buyer in seeing some things other then "oh my f'ing m8 has so many problems" this or that, bring on the poll, there are enough trolls around anyway.

Don't want to be accused of being a troll, but all the M8 issues did permanently put me off buying one. I've a pair of M6s and a full suite of fast ASPH M lenses, but with price rises, IR filters and Leica talking confidently about a M9 with full frame, I'm prepared to wait another year.

Conversely I felt I could trust Olympus even with first batch. So as a compliment to M series, I gave in and bought a E3 and 25 f/1.4 + 7-14. The E-3 certainly seems to right first time.
The E3 was a make or break camera for them in the pro/prosumer market - the M9 will have similar expectations. So I hope lessons learnt will ensure, a perhaps late, but full debugged M9.

Not that is interesting - where did you hear/see that? It would be a sensation in the Leica world.

Deutsch sollte kein Problem sein - You are the first to pick this one up. They don't give a source - it may be that they are repeating internet rumours.
The original text is a lot more careful than the Google translation. It does not say " there will be a..." but "there is supposed to be.." which sounds a considerably different. Nor does it say " Thus far....innovations" That translates better as: " As far as known up till now the developers are fiddling primarily with three innovations. On one hand there is supposed to be an M9 rangefindercamera with full-frame sensor. That makes for maximum image quality. Further they are working on a R10 DSLR with an extra large chip and autofocus, a complicated development, especially the shutter and the lenses. And finally there is the possiblity that some kind of " small" digital M should come on the market."

It sums up what we find on LUF but tells us nothing about actual developments, as "The company tells us little about the future model lineup".....

But it would be good for Leica.However, sales would probably never approach the M8. I would expect a price around the 10.000 $.

Unfortunatly my M8 will be travelling back to solms,
All my images have a nice blue line of F*cked up pixels.
I also suffer from my camera freezing and the shutter not activating and I have to remove the battery and cross my fingers every time.
It also has a habit of going to sleep and not waking up.

This sounds bad. I havn't had any problems. So far. After about 9 months of use. But I use mine very little. May be I have had 1000 exposures so far. And you? How heavy have you been using yours?

I fully agree with you.

The German text sounds more like an suggestion or speculation, on the writer/journalist's part. It surely isn't an official Leica statement. Further; a full frame M9 is an impossible technical proposition today. And for the foreseeable future.

Strong rumors talk of a CLM sort of digital solution. With a 1,5 crop sensor and a affordable price tag. Sounds a lot more realistic.

You can extract it from the "image unique" tag in the files. It's hexadecimal. In case you run an OSX Mac and got exiftool:

70% of the 122 so far to have contributed to the poll have never had a problem with their camera, surely that says something?

My M8 died last Jan and had to be sent back to be overhauled. It took 2 months. My tri-elmar lens also had a problem. It loosened up so that i could not change F stops. That repair took months also. Everything seems to be fine now.
