relubricating a summarit - *lol* what a headline

seriously, just had to laugh at the vocabulary I used in the title.. 😀

..but back on topic: bought a pretty good looking "user" summarit (no haze!! 😱 just scratched dusty etc. 😱 but who cares.)

the only gripe I have with it is that close to the nearer focusing distances, the thread becomes noticeably stiffer, so I'm guessing the lens might profit from being relubricated.

who can do something like that in Europe? it's not a real issue, but for a reasonable price..😕

1. get some naptha (commonly lighter fluid), a fine syringe or fine tweezers, some shutter lubricant, and some helical grease. Go to "Fargo Enterprises" if needed to buy the supplies.

2. look at the rear of the lens, and find the helical threads

3. drop in a tiny drop of natha, and run the helical back and forth

4. if it loosens, follow with a drop of shutter lubricant oil. The oil will work into the thread

5. then try to work some helical lubricant grease into the thread

6. wipe off the black lube often

cool, so I wouldn't even have to take it apart. that's what would have scared me..

I have some light sewing machine oil here.. tempted to just put a drop on the screw mount... is there a way for it to penetrate inside of the barrel, or is that unlikely? .. hmm hmm...
 
Max, I recommend against use of any light oil for lens lubrication. After time
you'll find it anywhere in the lens, for instance on the aperture blades.

The only way to do it right is to take the barrel apart and use a heavier
grease, IMO.

ah, thanks for the warning. so that's a possible reason why on some irises you might find oil. interesting. yet that microtools outfit also sells shutter blade oil. don't want any on the inside of the glass, though, that's my horror scenario.

anyways, already contacted a CLA shop, so let's see whether their quote will leave me speechless. it's a Leica lens, after all... hehee. will keep you updated.

I recently relubed a Russki Jupiter-8 (some disassembly required). It had ultra stiff focusing (dried lube) and also a floppy iris ring that wouldn't hold a setting. The lubricant I used for the helix is made for model locomotive use and is called Labelle 106T (for Teflon). The results were fantastically good. The lens can now be focused with the tip of a finger, but has just the right amount of "holding" power. It's even nicer than my DAG lubed Summicron, which was my index of wonderful before.

I also cleaned the old grease out with naptha (lighter fluid).

The iris ring was fixed with a "triangulated" ring of brass wire and that turned out well also. I'll be glad to help anyone with these fixes.
