Well-known
On flickr, M8 is called a P&S camera.

Well, on that list it's indeed all the same; all Leicas are point and shoots.Pherdinand said:everything is called point adn shoot on that list.
But there's something interesting going on.. apparently they think of the Epson as a more serious camera: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/epson/

Hmmm. I see, a DSLR no less. So there is one I can use my M lenses on. Autofocus too, no doubt.....

Yes M8 as a P&S is an accurate description. If you are lucky it will be focused in the intended place as well. If not use the manual override option. I love the science of ergonomics.

This matters how, in the great scheme of things?
It's a complete fiction anyway, since it appears to take it's information from the EXIF data alone. I've uploaded (for example) enough M2, IIIc and IID images in the last month to register on their graphs, but of course they are not there.
These are cod statistics of the order of "sick people ride in ambulances therefore don't ride in an ambulance and you won't get sick"

Well, Flicker’ certainly has a unique vernacular on what constitutes a P&S. However, in the great scheme of things I suppose it’s a backhanded compliment in that the diminutive size of the M8 is perceived in this way.
