Glueing ring to lens - Sonnar 2.8/40

A small ring on the front of my 40mm f/2.8 Sonnar (Rollie 35S) fell off this morning. The ring sits behind the filter threads and gives the lens serial number, that it is a Sonnar 2.8/40, made by Rollei and Rollie HFT. Although it is mostly cosmetic (& informative) I would like to replace it. It appears to have been glued on in three places. I was able to carefully scrape off the dried glue (yellowish in color) from the back of the ring. Any suggestions on the type of glue to use to replace this ring. Could it have been shellac? I realize this needs to be done carefully & with a minimum amount of glue.

There are many types of glue you could use but I would have thought a household contact adhesive (Goop maybe?) would be a good choice. These are the type that you allow to cure partially before joining and they are typically quite strong without requiring excessive amounts.

Obviously you don't want something that's too liquid because it might end up in the wrong place and before using any adhesive you should try and verify that it's not going to damage what you're working on. Is the ring plastic or metal? If it's plastic then this is something you really have to pay attention to.

Whatever you do don't use cyanoacrylate (super glue) because it'll almost certainly either flow into the lens and ruin it or fog the optics, meaning you'd need to carry out potentially damaging cleaning afterwards.

Thanks Matthew - I used three small dabs of Goop and that seems to be working fine. If it lasts as long as the first glue it will be someone elses problem the next time it falls off!!
