Even if the rumor turns out to be true, this wouldn't be a rangefinder camera. It would be an AF camera with a non-TTL viewfinder.
The AF technology involved -- using contrast detection off the imaging sensor -- is what's responsible for the s-l-o-w response and shutter lag that drive people crazy with most current compact digital cameras that use exactly the same system. (That's also why Nikon admits that the "live view" AF on its forthcoming D3 and D300 DSLRs won't work on moving subjects.)
So, what we're being promised by this rumor is a balky compact digicam, with the additional wrinkle of interchangeable lenses. This may be exactly what some people want, but again, it won't have a rangefinder, so it's not a rangefinder camera.
