Rumor Mill: Looks like potential for a Nikon digital rangefinder w/ modified m-mount

perhaps it's some kind of m-mount lens with a built in ultrasonic motor? You know there's a lot of "reall estate" that can be utilized on the mount so it won't be surprising if they add a few circuit points. The question is whether the RF is really coming back and worth making a new line of AF RF lenses, given the superb sales of DSLRs at the moment, and the many problems re. oblique incidence that DRFs ultimately face.

Even if the rumor turns out to be true, this wouldn't be a rangefinder camera. It would be an AF camera with a non-TTL viewfinder.

The AF technology involved -- using contrast detection off the imaging sensor -- is what's responsible for the s-l-o-w response and shutter lag that drive people crazy with most current compact digital cameras that use exactly the same system. (That's also why Nikon admits that the "live view" AF on its forthcoming D3 and D300 DSLRs won't work on moving subjects.)

So, what we're being promised by this rumor is a balky compact digicam, with the additional wrinkle of interchangeable lenses. This may be exactly what some people want, but again, it won't have a rangefinder, so it's not a rangefinder camera.

RF Digital

Well the P.M.A. show has come and gone with no mention or mock up of a digital rangefinder. I guess we will all have to be patient and see what the future holds.
