Fed front.JPG

Fed back.JPGPicked this up cheap; body shutter, lens all seem ok for a user --- BUT --- of course, no take-up spool. I've done a little digging, none of the spools I've seen look like they would fit. Prospects for fabrication also seem dim. This is my first FSU and I'm prepared for a test of patience. Any ideas? Thanks

am i really such a bonehead?

am i really such a bonehead?

I'm ignorant of the FSU genre, will the spools pictured at Fedka just slide onto the tapered shaft in my pic?

Stimpy,

The later FEDs (3-5) all used the same spool which just pushes on the shaft. Yours is the less common 2L, which is effectively a 3b with the shutter of a 2, so the same spools will fit it. Enjoy...

Contact Yuri at Fedka and he'll get back to you with the info you want. But please, buy it from him once he does.

I had the same problem with my fed 3 - no take up spool, finally got one from alex photo
BTW why you mad at yourself, you got a nice FSU now, just need spool

I can understand why you are prepared for testing your patience.
You bought an old camera for peanuts , a pig in a poke so to speak.
Actually I`ve bought 7 old FSU`s and only one had to go back for an exchange but I was diligent in making my selections and who I purchased from.
I have also learned to make it a point to only buy ones that have been CLA`d or are guaranteed to work correctly and have a refund or exchange policy.. Of course these are mechanical items and things still go wrong but even with the old high priced Leicas far too many need servicing.
Anyway, lets hope yours works good andf you get a lot of enjoyment from it.

Thanks, you guys were great. Confirmed a deal with Yuri last night, got a case and a spool headed my way. I'll start cleaning this baby up and adjusting the rangefinder so I can take her out for a spin.

For some odd reason I have both a FED-2 and a FED-3. The 2 uses a take-up spool and the three has a pronged "quickload" sort of thing with no spool. I have read that it is possible to switch the quickload thing in to the 2, so that is what I will be doing as I use the 2 more than it's newer brother due to the 3 being a bit larger in the hand.

Does anyone have a FED-3 that uses a take-up spool ? If so, maybe someone previously swapped the quickload in to an older camera . . . ?

My Fed-2 came without spool, too. Thanks to Kim I have one now. (very grateful!)

Btw, I don't want to troll around, but I just lost an auction for a Jupiter 8 lens on German evilbay. It was a bit damaged and heavily used, but for 2 euros only. And in the last second someone overtook me.:bang:

Anyway, have a nice rest of the weekend and fun using your camera!

I have a FED 3a and 3b. The 3a uses a spool, the 3b has a film in it so I can't look but , from memory, it's the same. My FED 4 also has a spool but my 5C has the "quick-load" type you describe. Who knows what variations existed but I'd guess yours has been swapped out.
