Today UPS brought me my new Reflecta. Yes you have to feed each negative individually and it doesn't scan warp speed but its tiny, weighs a kilo and is therefore extremely portable. I'm very pleased with the first results:

Those look good to my eye. I guess it's not available in the states?

They used to sell these in Jessops here in the UK under the 'Primefilm' brand. Probably sold in the US as well under some other brand. Seem to pop up on eBay once in a while.

What type(s) of film were you scanning?

I found a web site that offers these and has a review. It's www. scandig.com. They are in the Uk I believe. The Dmax is low at 3.2, but the scans shown here look good, at least on the web. It is an interesting looking scanner.

The first shot was HP5 in Rodinal, The second was APX 400@1600 in TMax Dev and the third was the same, APX 400@1600 in TMax Dev

Hello,
right now I'm looking for a new scanner. It came to my ear, that this model produces vertical stripes with some b&w films. Here's an example (unfortunalety in German). He had these problems with two scanners (first one was replaced). Another user claimed the same.
Sounds bad and I wished it isn't true. Please tell me you don't have any problems like that after testing a bit longer now... ;-)

Well, I've been using it a bit more now and am still very pleased with results. I'd like to point out that this is my first negative scanner though, therefore I don't have much experience with them. I'll report back to you in a week

I have an HP Photosmart S20, and if it gets hot, say by scanning two rolls of ~30 frames in quick succesion, it starts banding (one band, near the top of each frame, across every frame on a strip). If I am lazy about it and delay inserting a new strip of five once in a while I have no issues. Also, I have fewer issues in winter than in summer with inside temps near 90F. It's less of an issue than a hassle, to be honest, as a bad scan is simply time wasted rather than real damage done.
Electronics dislike heat, and I've noticed imaging sensors tend to be more sensitive. I'd suggest that one guy's issues might be related to environment and usage more than an inherent flaw in a product that will impact every user.
It's pretty clear the Reflecta is a device designed for scanning individual frames on an infrequent basis. If you intend to scan every frame of multiple rolls every time you use a scanner, one would be better served with a different product. But for what it is designed to do, the Reflecta seems like a great product.

Maxapple88: Thanks. One more thing... Do you know if it's possible to scan the image plus a bit of the gorund material in order to get "natural a black border" (example)?
40oz: Well, I think I'd pre-scan several images per roll to see what I've got. But when it comes to the real scanning, it'll be only a few pictures per roll.

If you look at the first shot I posted there is a small border around the frame. The negative strip sits in its groove quite tightly though, so getting a border on all sides isn't as easy. I have tried but the bottom always stays blank. I've seen the best results for rugged edges from scanned prints

Alright, so I've been using this scanner for a couple of weeks now and I must say, I'm still very happy with it. Scanning a bulk of negatives in one go is a bit of a pain but selected, single frames work like a charm. Some more examples:
HP5@800 in Rodinal 1+50
Neopan400@800 in TMax Dev 1+4
Tri-X 400@1600 in Rodinal 1+50

I got it for 269€ including Silverfast, which is a scanning software that appears to raise the quality of the scans considerably. From this German site here: http://filmscanner.info

thx for the info on pricing! have you tried any colour film with the scanner? wondering about the dynamic range with colour scans.

Not yet no. I have some Velvia in the freezer but I want to wait for better weather. Since I do b/w myself, colour is a longer procedure for me and simply not worth it yet.infrequent said:thx for the info on pricing! have you tried any colour film with the scanner? wondering about the dynamic range with colour scans.

Sorry to barge in like this, but I found this thread from googling for the refecta scanner. I like your photos Max, I hope to see some results with those velvia and the scanner

Max,I was thinking to buy the same scanner. Are you still satisfied? Does the Silverfast worth its money? Is it indeed much better than the Reflecta's program?I got it for 269€ including Silverfast, which is a scanning software that appears to raise the quality of the scans considerably. The Reflecta is IMHO worth for his price. I use vuescan as Scanning Software, it's def better than the cyberview software. The haptic is a little "fiddley" but the results are pretty good.
