One of my RD-1s has this same shutter-cocking problem. Advancing the leaver beyond my usual, gentle 'sweep' completes the required connection, consistently. I don't do this aggressively, in case I induce extra wear. The problem has been apparent for almost a year, but doesn't seem to be worsening. I am wondering if I should send it off to Epson for replacement / repair. I would be so sad to lose one of my trio. I have bonded with these little things more than with any other camera I own / have owned.

Your problem probably isn't this, but it's possibly an issue with digital cameras and the r-d1 especially. You don't live anywhere near a strong source of electromagnetic or microwave radiation like a mobile phone mast do you?
Last year I was photographing mountain bikers on a very high trail in Northumberland adjacent to a military communications or radar station. I was shooting with Canon 30D SLR's and my r-d1. Suddenly, the r-d1 started acting very strangely, the wind on would seemingly cock the shutter but not fire when the release was pressed, although this would again loosen the wind on lever to apparently charge the shutter again with the same result. the camera would also make some relay click type noises too and would not reset even when the battery was removed. B****rs I thought, it's knackered and finished the job on the SLR's.
Back down the hill, the camera started working flawlessly again. Several months later, I was back at the same location shooting a vintage tractor hill climb and exactly the same thing happened to the r-d1 again. I can only assume that the electrics were being messed about by whatever was emanating from the military installation.
I hate to think what this stuff was probably doing to my brian sells

It's all in the fine print. Pg 5 of the R-D1 users guide.
"This device must accept any interference recieved, including interference that may cause undesired operation. "
I wonder if it can have other problems besides the shutter not working . I'll just let the imagination run wild with possibilities.
Crane if it's still under warranty send it back. It sounds like you have more than one R-D1. Maybe it's time to give some love to the other 2.
