Reala on Nikon Coolscan

Hi,

I have problems getting reasonable colour accuracy from my Nikon coolscan IV when trying to scan Fuji Reala negatives. I have the Nikon Scan 4 and the latest Vuescan software. While the scans from Vuescan are substantially sharper than from Nikon Scan, it doesn't really help much with the colour.

If I understand the edge marking of my negatives correctly, this is Reala Generation 7. The build in Reala profiles in Vuescan go to Generation 2 only. I had a bit of a play and am presently settled on "generic" negative film. After scanning the reads are significantly to magenta. I have to turn the color wheel in PS by 8 units on the reds to get somewhere. The greens also seem funny, not really ontop of those. Overall it is quite laborious.

Anyone has a good workflow they like to suggest?

Afraid I can't be of much help, but am interested in what others are doing. I've also always used the generic C41 setting in Vuescan for Superia Reala (or whatever it's called in the U.S.) & then tweaked the color settings in Vuescan & Photoshop. Konica Impresa 50 is another emulsion that gives me weird colors, but I only have a few rolls of that left . . .

If it is a lot of hassle, you might just give up on it and buy easier to work film. Right now I am not to keen on using up my Reala either ...

I had a look at http://fujifilm.co.uk/film/download/superiaReala.pdf on the fujifilm uk web-site. The toe is quite different for the three colours, which might be (part of) the problem. The cyan layer might also carry a share here.

Still, I have a number of negatives, so some input on how to scan them would be nice. Thanks

I had some problems with the reala on Vuescan, scanned on a HP scanjet though.

What I did was just scan it flat, every setting on 0 and film setting was on reala, I only got one setting for reala on my Vuescan.

Then I used Lightroom to fix the color.

Thanks for the reply. I have Photoshop Elements 6. I find it hard to get ontop of the problem in there as well. The colour wheel to turn reds seems to help something.

Is it Vuescan that's the issue? I recently scanned some Reala on a KM SDIV using the Minolta software and the scans looked fine.

If you have some clean white, jet black or grey areas of the image, you can right click on that point in the preview to set Vuescan's white balance from that colour. Does that help?

Hi thanks, I tried that, once I understood the toe issues. It helps using a white balance from a grey or white area, but doesn't completely get over the problem.

The problem exists more or less with both pieces of scansoftware I have: Nikon Scan and Vuescan.
