Light Hunter - RIP 2010
Has anyone here done a freighter cruise? I would be interested in hearing about it. I'm thinking about a very long one at some time in the future as a way of doing a re-set on life.

I worked a riverboat cruise line for a while - American Queen - up and down the mississippi --- freighter cruises tend to be rugged from my understanding
This doesn't look very rugged to me.

I don't know how long they go between ports, but looks to be very much on the quiet side while at sea.
I think I'd enjoy it...but I'm known to be a bit odd.

Never done it but I would consider how immune or not you are too being sea sick. First you think you are going to die and after a few days of it you wish you had. I have done that on a destroyer.

Sounds cool. Maybe when our son is in college, in another 17 years or so.
You might ask over at openphotographyforums.com. One of the site founders specializes in photographing luxury yachts (are there any "non-luxury" yachts?), and there seems to be a crowd of people there who know about cruising and long sea voyages.

Modern freighters don't roll and pitch quite as much as destroyers.
Friend of mine used to have a sideline arranging such trips. He thought the fun went out of it when the spread of containerization cut times in port -- where he (and his clients) would once have two or three days to wander while cargo was loaded and unloaded, the turnaround was getting down to 24 hours. Accommodations depend on the ship. If you Google 'freighter travel' quite a bit comes up.

Knocking around in 30 ft and under sail boats is the Gulf of Mexico during storms used to be my idea of fun. Never had a problem with motion sickness in small boats or small aircraft making the earth and sky swap places.
