Does anyone have any suggestions about a good lube material for my sticky J8 focus mechanism? Hopefully something that will not break down and leak into the lens elements, and is also readily available.
Assuming you are stripping it down, cleaning it and reassembling it, I pass on something from a very experienced manufacturer who got it from a repairer:
Vaseline and lanolin can run in hot weather, and cause the oils to migrate in places where they are not wanted.
Most FSU lenses don't have helical threads as fine as those found in other lenses- they require the dampening action of heavier greases to give a movement with less play and some slack.
I use automotive axle grease with some of the LTM Jupiters, particularly the Jupiter-9.
I narrowed it down to the Wax-based bicycle lube and the Lithium grease. I hade the bicycle lube at home, so I used it. it's still a little stiff, but it should not run off into the lenses or blades.
