My darn LCD is permanently off again!!!

I sent my RD-1 for repair once and received it back (under warranty). Did not look at it or switch it on for over one month and when I did, the replacement Epson sent had the LCD not working. I called Epson and they said: sorry, your warranty expired a month ago!
I begged and they accepted my claim to fix it at no charge.

I sent it out again and got it back it working condition. That was 3 months ago and I hardly used it in the meantime.
Today I try to use it again after a month or so of not touching it and the LCD does not come on. EVER!

I try pressing different buttons while turning the power on, but nothing happens. All dials go into position, but the LCD is not coming on.

Before calling Epson again and trying to get it fixed, I would rather ask here if anyone had this problem before? Is there a simple fix to it?
I tried removing the battery while on and it will not budge.

Please help if you can.

Yikes, that doesn't sound good. Given that it's happened after prolonged periods of non-use it may be related to a power issue. Have you tried completely draining the battery and giving it a full charge?

Just a thought. Hope you get it worked out.

I actually have 4 different batteries and they all do not make the LCD come on. You might be right though. It happened after prolonged non-use.

It does stand to reason that a lack of use may be related.

I'd start with charging a battery, putting it in the camera and completely draining it. Then give her a full charge and see where you end up.

Did Epson give you extended warranty on the parts they fixed last time? Since it could be something diffective they put it to fix it first time. Worth calling them about it.

I did call Epson and they state that they warranty repairs for one month. Unfortunately my broken LCD happened 3 months after that. They gave me a phone number of their service center for regular repair.

The whole thing seems to be a bug, since the camera was hardly used. I wish I could talk to someone at Epson who specializes in the development of this camera.

That's why the screen has a swivel-feature... So just turn it and you don't see it doesn't work anymore!

I was thinking like Didier. Did they send you a different camera back or fix yours? I'm kind of thinking you need to find someone outside of Epson who can fix them. Someone who will stand behind their work longer than one month. It may cost you more, but I suspect you will have a better camera in the end.

... and i am seriously disappointed with Epson.

whom to you say that... my first R-D1 had a tilted sensor, tilted framelines, went off rf alignment without being knocked, was replaced by a new R-D1s, which worked well for 15 months except the vertical alignment which went off after a few days of usage only, and now the shutter went #404 and since it's in repair at Steve's (and meanwhile on the way back to me)...

Does Epson still maintain parts and expertise for fixing it? If I get this camera today, will I be able to get it fixed (even at a cost) for as long as Epson remains in business?

Haven't heard about official Epson statements concerning product support in the future. Actually it looks like they do have spare parts and they do make repairs. But I guess even not Canon or Nikon would support all products they ever made, as long as they remain in business. There's only one foolish company in Solms near Wetzlar doing something like this.

I would try to "human engineer" the situation. Keep calling back until you get someone who will give you a break and allow you to have it fixed under warranty,

After all, if they replaced the LCD once, and then it failed again within a few months, I would think they might be flexible.

PS: When you get a repaired item back, why don't you immediately test it? Why stick it in a drawer and "not turn it on"? Not logical.

If I remember correctly, Epson said that repair for the R-D1 will be possible for the next few years (5?). Not sure, but I think someone at RFF posted that Epson told him so.
