I have one M3 without the framelines lever, and a newer one, with the framelines lever.
Because I appreciate the simplicity of the M3, I sometimes wonder why they ever added this feature.
I never use it. Does anyone else use it, and if so, when and for what?

I probably have used it when I was an M newbie but after a while I knew where the framelines are and never touch the lever again.

Have shot Leica M6's extensively since 1996 and never use it.
Shoot almost exclusively with 35mm lens, occasionally 28 or 50.

i use it because i have only fsu lenses and only 50mm adapter. so when i use jupiter 12 which is 35mm i keep lever pulled to the left with one finger.

Like Ray, I used to use it far more than I do now. After 35 years or so with M-series Leicas I have a pretty good idea of what I can get in, though I'll very occasionally check the coverage of 28mm (a focal length I use seldom and therefore have no real feeling for, but my wife sometimes carries one) and sometimes I'll use the lever to decide between 75 and 90 in the unlikely event I have both with me.

I need it to bring up the right framelines for my VC 35mm (I got an old 50mm adapter with it, brings up the 50 frame).
And I'm still a newbie. Come back in a few years, if they still sell film then. If they do, I'll be shooting my M2!

I use it mostly on my M6 when checking composition (if timing permits) between 50mm and 35mm. Still think it is useful feature.
Have it on my M3 as well, but rarely use it there because only 50mm and 90mm frames are available and 50mm to 90mm composition coverage difference is quite obvious IMHO without utilization of the lever.
(but still prefer one to be on my M3)

This feature seems to me most desired when missing! I use it occasionally on the cameras which have it, yet its lack comes to my attention when using a Minolta CLE which doesn't have this lever.

Yes. I mostly use screwmounts with the right adaptor. Except when I use the Nokton 40mm. It's nothing to pull the switch over. It has become habit

I use only primes on various film/digital sensors including 35mm film, the 4/3 crop on the Leica M8 and the 1.6 crop on my Canon SLR. Frankly, I have a hard time remembering what focal lengths look like on different cameras. I love that little bugger (the lever, that is).
I'm also pretty new to serious photography.
Cheers!
