I saw an R-D1 in store where I’ll be for the next few months which the price is very tempting. It might be an occasion to jump in the digital RF world. It’s a bran new R-D1 and the deal goes with a Rollei 40mm f2.8. Isn’t weird since their is no 40mm frame lines or could be easy to deal with. There is always the possibility to resell the lens but, it’s a good lens…. I might prefer buying a more suitable lens.
I know it’s not a recent model, but is it still worthy to buy a new old camera, should I look more for an R-D1s. And what are the differences between them, all I read about is not much or little but, what are they.

As soon as you get it you can download for free the Rd-1s firmware. Voila, you will have an Rd-1s. Concerning the 40mm lens. Just set frameline to 35 and you should be fine. How cheap is it?

I didn't say it was cheap, but the price is tempting. Still, this is always relative.
Actually it’s at $2250 with the lens and I have the feeling theirs some room for a small negotiation.

If you are careful and patient, you should be able to find one on eBay (or here) for $1500-$1800. They are great cameras!

This is a second option, a little more money but the R-D1 might be interesting as long as the two models are the same after the updated firmware.
Buying the R-D1 has to be a better deal if I understand well. I’ll try a more solid negotiation. Taking in consideration it's a new one, how much I should pay for the R-D1 and the Rollei 40mm f2.8

I was in a similar spot. I went new because of some of the issues that can arise with used digital cameras. My fear was the possibility of getting a body that had been mishandled. Guess I'm risk averse on such matters.

I just picked a R-D1s from ebay for $1550. I do not know if the additional $700 for Rollei 40mm HFT can be justified -- I will not go for it since I have some Leica lenses in hand already. The ~$1700 used one looks like a warm deal for me.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the only hardware difference between the two is that the rangefinder in the R-D1 is more easily adjusted than the RF in the R-D1s. I want to say that in order to adjust the RF vertically in the R-D1s, the entire top plate must be removed, whereas this is not the case with the R-D1. Don't quote me on that, though.

Either way, you can almost always save some money by getting the R-D1 and updating the firmware as opposed to buying the R-D1s.

Cheers.

Yes i do as far as my bodies are concerned (i own both R-D1 & R-D1s) but i'm not sure for others. This has been discussed here already. You might wish to do a search on the forum.

Really? Wow. That would make the R-D1 much more attractive to a DIY'er than an R-D1s.

The R-D1s is not sold in Europe, but you can still find some R-D1. So really, this is exactly the same as they will sell it with the updated firmware anyway. The easier RF adjustment capability on the R-D1 make it a safer bet long term as it seems easier to adjust.

Steve:

Congrats on the new R-D1s. Like yourself I'm new to the RF world -- just a few weeks ahead of you. Rest assured you'll love taking pictures with the camera. FWIW, my DSLR hasn't been out of its bag since my R-D!s arrived.
