enjoy the view?

so, i'm sitting on my front steps with the dog, just leaning back, petting the pooch and looking up at the sky.
the sky is getting itself ready to rain, the clouds are moving in and the sun is finding all sorts of places to hide. the view is quite beautiful and i start thinking that maybe i should get myself a cheap dslr with a set of zooms, wide and tele, for shots like this sky in transition.
but then i think that i don't really care for the photos of the sky like this as much as i like being under a sky like this, waiting for the wet to fall.

can you enjoy the view and not be tempted to photograph it?

Yes. I often enjoy the view to the skies or landscapes knowing well that no picture can tell the magic of the moment (or that my ability to take such a picture lacks ;-))

I gave up on sunrise, sunset after trying to bracket, EV+-, different color temp settings on my DSLR. They looked worse than a no meter Kodachrome taken 45 years, when I had no brain.

Sometimes it's best to let go - the image will never match the reality anyway , but it's difficult if you tend to see in viewfinder all the time !

Joe, I find that a digi P+S cam is adequate to record situations like the one you describe. No ned for a dSLR with zoom lenses.

Yes I can, I always think though: "this would be a great photograph"
I´m a surfer and I have seen so many moments in the water that I would like to see on a photograph but then I would not like to let the next wave go for that photo 😉 Maybe when I get too old to surf the shoulder high+ waves I´ll take my camera in the water, until then I´ll just enjoy the moment and the view 🙄

I'm with Frank here ... a digi point and shoot is fine for these moments if you feel you must photograph them. Also as said photographing them is not always necessary ... often just nicer to sit and take it in and not worry about trying to capture it.

This was taken with my A620 point and shoot in exactly the circumstances you are talking about the other morning. If I'd messed about getting the D70s out, making sure it had a suitable lens on it, seeing what settings my son had left it on etc etc the moment may have passed.

Good Pitxu, are they all from Basquelandia (Euskal Herria)? And are they all digital or not? I wish I lived where there was weather, it is the same almost everyday here in CA. If we have clouds they are flat overcast.

Years ago when I was doing a lot of traveling, I spent many months in the Phoenix area.
I would go out after work and head toward the Superstition Mountains/Apache Junction to photograph in the desert.
Many times I would stay and watch the sunset and not photograph it...I would just sit on some hilltop and watch as the sun would go down...
Most of the time I would be the only one out there and would feel I was the only one actually getting to see this wonderful sight...
And when it was all done I would say a quick "Thank You"...

I love the way the weather gets just right before it starts to rain....the wind comes in and the humidity is just right...and it's a bit refreshing, the moment is so quick that if you try to capture it...you wouldn't really get a chance to enjoy it.

I'm not a cloud fan, but the misty early summer mornings in the countryside are nice. Very easy to see deer and foxes on this time aswell.

For me nothing beats the moment the rain starts to fall. It is just magical for me.

And I too find it difficult to put the camera up sometimes.
