Hi
I'm looking for a Yashica 124G TLR- Is anybody here selling one or knows where I can get one (preferably in the UK) for a decent price? I'm hoping to get one for around £100.

Thanks,
Lena

wow. 100 pounds? I remember when I got mine for $15 and then paid $85 for a CLA. That was only...3 years ago? These things have climbed in price like crazy. Make sure to get a square hood, either via ebay or with it.

They quite often sell on ebay for under £100, or are you trying to avoid the bay? For example, this went yesterday for £94 and a search of completed items turns up others for quite a bit less, though as always condition is important:

You could also try putting a request in your signature on the forum, though for people to see it you'll have to post a bit more.;)

I was trying to avoid ebay as it's always a risk with the condition of the camera. I've also seen reserviced yashica's on second hand camera websites for under £100, which is better than paying that amount for one on ebay without a guarantee.

Definitely, though I don't know if I've ever seen one that cheap from a real shop. Earlier Yashica-mats seem common at around £50 to £60 but the 124G fetches a premium. By the way, have you read this?:

It might be worth looking out for a 124 rather than a 124G since the advantage of the 'G' is rather questionable and the 124 is usually cheaper.

I have a 124G but don't use it's meter so the electronics in it really don't matter...
If you can find a 124 in good shape you will find one within your budget...
Plus from what I've read, the 124's gears are better than the "G's"...
And do get a lens hood!!!

Very interesting page of Karen's. I never knew that and would look for a 124 long before the 124G!

Good to know if I ever actually go down that path.

Thanks.

I had serious gas for one a couple of weeks ago, and they were around $150 to $180 at a camera show. Kaiyen was kind enough to check one out for me, and he thought it was in pretty good shape.

However, walking around the aisles, the Nikon bug bit, and I thought it would be more practical and something the kids could easily handle so I'm still waiting on a MF. Would be nice if Costco processed the film.

Late production Yashica D's have the same Yashinon lens, and usually go for much less money. Fewer features, tho, and not that common.

For me, it was a nice budget intro to 6x6 TLR.

Seriously consider getting a Rolleicord instead. Much better built.

What one guy who repairs TLRs says about the Yashicas:

"Yashica cameras can be very high in functionality however, they are prone to wear, and I cannot warrant them, so I will not work on them. I have opened the film advance to find metal parts that were made from Heidelberg Beer cans...Does that sound like a quality camera to you? At times, I can be talked into working on the early TLR, such as the A, C, or D. But please ask me before sending the camera--I have to be in the mood to work on them."

I bought a new 124G when I was in the military. It was a special order item that wasn't purchased. I only paid $84.00 US for it. I owned it for around three months, but never used it. I sold it to a friend for what I paid for it. This was in the 1970s. I had another friend that used the 124G for wedding photography ( he had three of them). Good luck with your search.

Just keep your eyes open, one will come up at a reasonable price. I got a 124 in Feb. of this year for $60. Granted, the meter doesn't work but I didn't care. The rest of the camera is just fine and it works perfectly. People on ebay seem to be afraid of cameras with very minor problems. Often perfectly good users, if you like to take a chance. Makes it more exciting!

Unless you are in the habit of throwing your cameras in the trunk of your car, the quality of the Yashica is fine for its price.

Hi Lena, Im going to have to agree with wintoid idea about searching for a Rolleicord. From what many people have said the rollei is a more nicely built camera with better optics. Prices for 124Gs have gone through the roof lately so if you can handle knob wind advance and no light meter (use a handheld or guess, much more fun haha) then this might be a better option

Thanks for the advice everyone. I had my heart set on a yashy though, and I found one on mxv photographic for £120 with a years guarantee. Definetely the best deal I've found, so I ordered it. Check out my flickr page for my latest shots:)

Hey, yashy came this morning, ah what a fine looking camera. It's in mint condition and seems in perfect working order. Only thing I need now is a strap- Can anyone help?

There's a hama 10mm wide binocular strap that should fit the Yashica perfectly. Fedka.com sells them as well, but shipping cost from the U.S. should be too high for just the strap.

Best regards,
Uwe

I dropped mine. It's the only camera I've ever dropped. It's fine. Still works. Just the top portion where the meter needle is is bent out a bit.
