I spotted that my uncle was using a genuine Canon 50mm f/1.2 vented hood on his Nikon e-series 50mm lens last weekend! This seemed odd, as vented hoods are a little unnecessary in SLR land! Also, I guess that this hood in top condition is not an easy find? I think he picked this one up in Japan.

Does anyone know what they are worth?

They can cost as much as the lens itself - I paid $250 for mine last year. There's a cheaper alternative that will fit the 50/1.2, but I was in the mood to treat myself.

This recent eBay auction of said hood:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=310051002022

went for 26 UKP (about $50). Probably would go for a bit more for a seller in the US in dollars.

If it has a case, that increases the value.

I don't understand how the hood would fit on the Nikkor lens. Nikkor lenses are noted for using 52mm filters, and the Canon 50/1.2 has 55mm filter threads. Unless he was clamping it further up the lens than the filter ring.

The correct Nikon hood would probably offer your uncle's lens more protection from the sun. The Canon is so large in diameter that it really doesn't offer a lot of shade, it would have to be much longer before it would vignette. I'd suggest you buy the right Nikon hood and trade with him, if you have a use for the 50/1.2 hood.

S$50 is a great price for that hood!! I've seen quite a few of them and they are all hovering above S$200 each.

Cheers,

That hood costs usually much more than $50. I've seen the hood case only going for $150, once.

As such a fast lens is often used in artificial light conditions with spot lights, the hood is really necessary. The paint outside is a bit reflective, so when used on a Epson R-D1, it makes unwanted reflections into the rangefinder. I taped mine for that reason.

Thanks for the info, guys! He says he is using it on a 52-55 ring, and it is in good condition apart from a couple of nics in the black anodising. I'm going to try and persuade him to let me sell it on the forum here. It's wasted on that Nikkor!

The bargains my uncle picks up in Japan...sickening. You don't want to know the ridiculous price he paid for a beautiful Nikkor 28 PC shift lens. It seems in Japan that if there is any inperfection, the value of an item plummets.

I couldn't agree more on that. The Japanese gear are great value if you know where to look. And the selection is just unbelievable!! A lot of the rarer pieces are pretty common there too.

I saw quite a few 50mm f/1.2 hoods there but none were less than 3 digits though.

Cheers,
