A suitable case for treatment ?

I admit to vandalising late Kiev Kases to make useable 1/2 cases - older ones I keep for protection , but they are useless in the field [ or street ]

Any thoughts ?

I keep almost every camera in its case. I also prefer using them with the case even if they are not detachable to a half case. Instead of vandalising them, you could make them half cased with a knob like here http://www.keithberry.telinco.co.uk/Kiev-4.htm (scroll down)

I have no case for my Kiev 4 so I use its strap lugs, will do the job but walking around with an unprotected camera feels uncomfortable for me somehow. Still 4 frames to go on my Kiev! :)
 
Hi, I have modified two of my FSU camera cases to make them half cases by removing the permanent rivets and replacing them with press studs, dead easy and very effective.
 
They might be somewhat less useable for street shooting but if you examine the nicks ,gouges, rub marks, and blemishes on those old leather cases you can easily see the protection they have provided for the camera stored inside for all these years .
I cut the rivets and install heavy snaps to make 1/2 cases on all mine.

Could be but leather does breath.
Anyway, I have to think any original moisture has left long ago in these dried up old leather cases.
I think it`s more important to keep them in a reasonably dry environment than worrying about the case causing fungus.

Thanks, I've never been aware of it, my grandfathers camera's have been kept in an attic for years in their cases, and they haven't got fungus exept for one. But making a possible breeding ground of a lens is no good. I'll remove their cases.
 
If you have ever lived in a non dry climate (like Central America) you know about leather and fungus. You should have seen my Konica C35 after it stopped working and I decided to open it.
 
Camera cases, even half-cases, make it a little more difficult to change film, but do offer a little bump protection. I'll accept a few bumps and carry caseless, though I do use vinyl pouches for lenses. I've heard that warning about fungus, too, and my motto is "let there be no fungus among us." (I don't willingly eat mushrooms either!)
