It took flickr to show you that? I would have thought that to have been evident by 1970ish, especially so if you pay attention to fashion photography. There is a ton of noise on flickr, it is after all, the internet. When I can tolerate it, I usually see at least one thing that impresses me. Thats a pretty decent record considering how jaded I am... Hell, I spent almost 2 hours at the MOMA a few months ago looking through all the photo books in the gift shop and couldnt understand why a single one was in there and I do mean that literally. I'll take flickr over what the museum is pushing as "photography" currently...
I cant see what seeing more of an artist has to do with this website, the guy has his own to display his work. He didnt use this website to display his work, he used it to berate others who didnt agree with whatever his opinions were. There is a tremendous difference between having an opinion and belittling others for not agreeing with the opinion you have.
Ive said before, I liked the guys work quite a bit until I got to see how he treated others and that just kinda ruined whatever kind of hero he ever could be. Kinda like your favorite sports star who you grow up to learn beat his wife the whole time. Pretty much ruins any kind of respect you can have for someone...

Ned wasn't someone who merely expressed strong opinions. He was someone who went out of his way to act nasty and meanspirited and then got even nastier when people called him on it. If wanting to associate with civilized people makes us delicate doilies, so be it. Might as well call us pansies, momma's boys, and wusses while you're at it. 😕

I dont think he went out of his way or acted nasty. I often disagreed with the guy but I never took personally whatever he said. He has a strong personality - something many could learn from him. Most of is pictures were great, - something I can't say about most of the people, including myself. Hed being banned - loss for the entire RFF community, at least the ones that cared about good photography and not just about keep switching one lens or camera for the other. He took whatever equipment and did some great stuff with it. But some people seem to forget that and worry about how harsh his words sometimes were. At least this is better that begging for some camera donations. Well, none of you were married to the guy - so what do you care? Really, why get so sensative about things?

agreed. you can learn exactly how NOT to act towards other people online. This has nothing to do with having a thin or thick skin.
how so? his contributions here were not some incredible insights into photography or anything. he baited people into arguments and NEVER took the high road like a gentleman might consider doing. Occasionally he posted some pictures. If you want to see them you can visit his website, and see them all and have the delight of not having to deal with nastiness on this board.
Its hard to imagine that anyone really worried about how harsh his words were, the management clearly made a decision about the tone that would constantly be in the air on this board. There are civil ways to disagree and then there's being in the third grade... At some point the positive he posted ceased to balance the negative and that should be fairly obvious to see.

Regarding Flickr, I tend to think the really great photographers today know they're good and are trying to market their work either as commercial photographers looking for clients, or fine artists looking to sell pictures. That means doing things like having a website of your own, eg: www.fourteenplacestoeat.com, rather than using something like Flickr, which is not designed to highlight you the photographer the way your own website can and does. Having said that, I have seen some truly amazing work on Flickr that makes me wonder why this person isn't exhibiting work and why he/she hasn't got a personal website. Of course many Flickr users DO have sites and use Flickr to get a wider audience for their work, or because they enjoy the social aspect of Flickr.

Heh. I do find drinking to excess to be an advantage for painting, but photography requires a level of concentration that I find difficult to achieve when drunk.

Haha, it's also a good reason to have a neckstrap/wrist strap, lord knows my camera should've taken a few tumbles by now.
Also, i've often noticed my images look much better at the end of a pint...don't know what that's all about.

I dont understand why Woolen Mamoth has to be such harsh at his words. I dont see much differences between Wollen "sanctity" and Ned "evilness". Only one that little difference is that the one critizes another and believes he is acting as GOOD, SANE person while he thinks "oh how bad people are outside here omg" . Learn just accept our shortcomings and move on, dont we? Look at yourself at first before spiting out anything.

OK, out of respect for Ned and everyone else, let's not drag this down to an argument. Some folks appreciated Ned, others didn't, everyone recognizes he is a very talented photographer.

shame you see me as being harsh. truth is I could care less. when this site got to be something I didnt like, I stopped reading and participating. As did many other people. Its cool reading this site when its calm and when its not there are better things to do. Im certainly not here to prove a point and insult people. Anyhow, Im punching out of this one, you guys are making this dude into a martyr without my help....

well, maybe it was not harsch, but really unnecessary. If he is gone, so let it be. or you can drink a glass of champagne for such big occasion at home for yourself. Didnt you notice that with your such comments, you did make the forum less pleasant? How about contribute anything positive to RFF instead of punching out or yelling?

On the completely off thread topic of full carbon forks for bikes and the various replacements for the star fangled nuts available, there is an interesting kind of star fangled nut which is designed for full carbon forks.
If you imagine the two stars of the star fangled nut directly on top of one another instead of separated by 5 to 10mm or so as normal, and one rotated very slightly with regards to the other.
Hence instead of (say) ten protrusions sticking into the steerer tube you have twenty, but much less deep. Hence it did not dig far enough into the steerer tube (which is very thick on carbon steerer forks in any case) to compromise it's strength.
The advantage is that it weighs much less than the wedges, all of which tend to be fairly heavy.
No idea if you can still buy them, but they came with top end Cannondales back when they were still using Time forks (2005ish?) at the beginning of the CAAD7 era.
