I've done a few M3 cameras and the vulcanite on all has just flaked off, no chemicals needed. If it wasn't ready to come off chances are you wouldn't be removing it in the first place. Just put a body cap on the camera and use a bamboo skewer cut at an angle to pry the old covering off the camera... hard enough to pry the stuff off soft enough not to scratch. I then just give it a quick prep with rubbing alcohol to remove any loose particles of vulcanite that remain. You can, of course, use something to get the camera shell new looking (like a mild solvent or abrasive) but if you can't feel it by running your finger over it won't make any difference to how well the new cover adheres to the camera body or how the finished product will feel in the hand. Use a light coating of rubbing alcohol on the adhesive side of the covering to prolong the time you have to make minor adjustments to the fit of the new cover. I have used both major player's coverings and both have worked splendidly. Take your time and don't be afraid.
Love the feel of the Griptac and would replace an M6 cover with one even if the original was in perfect condition. Usual exceptions apply, but mine is a plain Jane M6...
