Where are the dissenting voices? I expected many more "stick with your CLE. When you are good enough to join Magnum then you may be worthy" and "It's not about the camera" posts.
Then again, I did post on a Leica M forum. It's a bit like asking if I should have another beer while standing in a beer hall at Oktoberfest.

One further question. Does the Rokkor 40mm bring up the 50mm framelines on the .72 MP?

It should unless it had been modified to bring up the 35mm frame-lines (like my Summicron-C)
Otherwise, I also would recommend you buying that BP MP !! Reading your original post, it is the only choice you have

Had an M7. Heard the siren-call. Bought a black paint MP. Heard the siren call again. Bought a silver chrome MP-3.
Now I've got four bodies (with an M8 that I never use) and couldn't be happier.

i went from film SLRs to digital SLRs to the CL and then the MP. i now still own the digital SLR system, and both the CL and MP, each body have their strengths and to me its not an either/or situation, i bring them all along on assignments and they seem to get along just fine

I succumbed to the sweet song.
Picked it up yesterday. The shop had at way below his cost price just to p!$$ his competitor off by undercutting him. Mind you, the cost price of anything like this in Australia always seems to be way more than anywhere else. What matters is that I have convinced myself I have picked up a bargain.
Some observations and comparisons with the CLE after about 36 hours with the camera.
1) The overarching impression is that this camera has everything you should need and nothing you don't in a beautifully crafted but fully functional package.
2) Is is solid. The build quality is several orders of magnitude greater than the CLE and it would want to be when it is several orders of magnitude greater in price.
3) The black paint shows up fingerprints.
4) I love the frame counter and the engraved "Leica" and serial number.
5) The viewfinder is significantly brighter than the CLE making low light focusing much easier.
6) Film loading is err... quirky. I loaded the first roll like a pro and then proceeded to botch loading the second roll :bang:. I have worked out why, so the next roll should be OK.
My wife has been charmed by it which is of great significance when bringing new kit into the house
No photos back yet so that joy awaits me. After all, it is about taking taking photos isn't it?

After a while it seems to stop picking up the fingerprints. Maybe it gets a covering of grease, sweat, whatever but I have a 3 year old one and a new one and the older one no longer has my sticky hand marks all over it. Black paint is a lovely finish.

To buy a analogue camera in 2008 is like applying for a membership in NSDAP in 1946. I bought a MP last year. But I don't use it anymore. 2008 is all digital, David. Whatever you do; use it!

In 2008 I bought six cameras: 5 film and 1 digital!
Film: Hasselblad 503CW, Leica MP, Leica MP-3, Fuji TX-2, Holga
Digital: Ricoh GR-DII
Why did I buy them film? Because although the world is going digital, there still aren't true alternatives to any of them!
Digital 6x6? Na-ah.
Full-frame digital 35mm rangefinder? Na-ah.
Full-frame digital panoramic? Na-ah.
Digital's got a long way to go, but enjoy your early-adoption arrogance...

As for the first part of this statement, well, you should know better. As for the second, 2008 all digital, what utter rubbish. We're on a 'rangefinder' forum here and unless i'm mistaken, there is only a few, percentage wise who have digi rangefinders. The rest of us use film. Ok we prob use a digicam of sorts but the main deal here Olsen is FILM.
Perhaps your keeping the MP for when the M8 goes t@@s up!

Sure,
I have a heep of analogue cameras bought 2.hand in the last 7 years. Ranging from Hasselblad 203FE, - with a range of lenses, SWC905, a new Zeiss Ikon, even a beautiful black Leica MP, all topped with a monstrous Nikon 8000ED canner. They are all rarely used and worth little compared to what I gave for it all. How smart was that?
- Now I have gone digital.
